Cahill on the Left

Player Valuation: £20m
After the showing of Cahill against Chelsea it is clear that he isn't happy trying to outjump centre halfs with his back to goal. He has not really been on top form recently and does pose a problem when he isn't scoring. He is not right for a 4 man midfield and yet hasn't been playing well behind the striker in a 5 man midfield. In tonights Echo Howard Kendall gives a good option for our Timmy...play him on the laft ala Gary Speed. Speed scored plenty of goals for Leeds and us from the left and this would give him more chance to time his runs for the cross. I'm only repeating what Sir Howard of Kendall has written but totally agree with it. It would be good to see Davey Moyes try it but that would mean beig less conservative!! Any thoughts?

I think with our African Nations players back this won't be so much of an issue as Pienaar's short crossing is excellent which is exactly the type of thing Cahill thrives on. Plus with Yak back his link-up play will also bring the late-arriving-into-the-box Cahill into it more.

With the Africans missing a whole element of the team is missing. With Yobo back, and Jags able to partner him in the center (assuming Baines is still injured) this allows Lescott to play LB and link up and attack in conjunction with Pienaar/Arteta/Osman. All this adds up to is lots of balls into the middle, which is something Yak and Cahill love. They are both finishers with the poachers instinct. Right, I am all crap clichéd out now :P

I am assuming that this thread is really more for while the Africans are away though.

Didnt he score an expert bicycle kick in his last outing against Chelsea? Or the one before that? With his back to goal? Outjumping the Backline?

So your saying that moving Cahill from the position where he has become one of the deadliest midfielders in the game to left winger will help him become even more deadly?

I dont know if you saw but Roger Federer got beat last night, proving that even the very best can have a bad day.

Where would you play Pienaar? In goal?

Would you drop Pinnar for Cahill? No contest in my eyes, Pinnar is by far the better footballer and a bigger threat. Cahill has a niche in the hole. We should use him more sparingly or consider moving him on while his stock is at its highest? If someone offered somewhere near £10m for him I'd take it now and replace him with a young holding midfielder..... Not that I want him to go, I just think that we have seen the best we could from Cahill and as Moyes' team evolves it is becoming a more and more fluid footballing side - Cahill doesnt fit that mold - he's a swashbuckling all action player - great on form but awful when he's not at his best. He was nullified completely in the Chelsea game where an out and out striker alongside Johnson could have given us a real threat...

The over head kick came from a cross. Sorry for your misunderstanding!!! The backline didn't jump as it was deflected in the air. You can't out jump someone that doesn't jump!!!

Roger Federer? Cahill is not having a bed day. He has been bad for a few weeks. Do you think Federer would look at changing things if he was ineffectual for weeks?

Pienaar isn't here so he can't play anywhere! Thought you may have noticed that!

I was paraphrasing one of the most successful managers in English football history. I was suggesting it to see if a change would bring the best out of Cahill again as he is poor at the moment and that could be down to tactics with the available personnel. Of course Pienaar would go back to LW when he returns. That is a no brainer.

Cahill doesn't win the flick ons does he? We lose the ball when it is played up to him don't we? That leads to extra pressure like we saw the other night doesn't it? Still perhaps McBrain we should just persevere with with something that isn't going to work.

Sorry for the tone but I was only giving air to an idea that I thought could possibly work and you retorted with sarcasm borne out of ignorance.

The thing is, Cahill won't do jack out on the wing. He doesn't have the skills for it. What this cat does, is arrive late into the box, pin-point headers and great short-range finishing.

He doesn't cross well, can't take players on, doesn't have a burst of speed.

I never mentioned left wing. I don't think he can play on the wing. It's slightly different to playing left midfield and tucking in. He can then arrive in the box for Arteta to cross.

I think you are wrong about his crossing though.

When i was in Oz a few months back the asia cup was on and in one of the games they brought Tim on and played him on the wing! Innitially i was like what the hell are they doing, but he was absolutly great out there and set up the two goals Oz scored! I think though, he does the most damage in midfeild.

Hes looked tired recently but the thing with Tim is you only really realise how much we miss him when hes not in the team!(y)

Come on. Knee jerk reaction or what?

Where are the goals going to come from? Who's been scoring more than any other midfielder bar Ronaldo in the las few years? You wanted an opinion and you got one buddy.

Sarcasm borne out of ignorance? No its just sarcasm, and if you cant handle that, don't post such a silly thread!

Who in the league would you replace him with if you wanted to sell him?

Don't post such a silly thread? Did you not get it at all that this thread came from the Dome himself. You are an idiot compared to HK, no one can can compare.

He's not fast enough for the wing. Plus he's not a very good passer. Gets most of his goals on set pieces and from being in the right place at the right time.
