Tim Cahill has turned to specially designed boots in his bid to avoid more metatarsal problems.

Cahill broke his metatarsal against Sheffield United in March of last season.
And he then damaged the same area of the foot when playing in Everton's pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen in July.

Metatarsal injuries have become high profile in recent years, with players like David Beckham, Michael Owen and Ashley Cole all suffering from broken bones in their feet.

Cahill told evertonTV he is doing everything possible to avoid further problems with the foot.

"I have met with the physios and they are talking about the asset I can be to the club in the years to come, not just the next five minutes," he said.

"I don't want to put my body at risk when it is such an innocuous thing that happened - to jump and land."

The Australian is exploring every avenue in order to minimise the possibility of any subsequent recurrence of the problem.

"But I really need to think about this," continued Tim. "People think 'what has he done to try and correct things?'

"Well I have had new boots made, I have tried different orthotics (foot supports).

"I have kept my weight down and tried to build more muscle and I have been doing different things with the physios and nutritionists as well to make myself stronger for when I get back."
If you don't want to put your body at risk Tim, maybe give it a second thought before flying around the world to play for Australia when you quite clearly aren't fit.

Excellent. Stronger, faster, quicker, fitter. I am all for that.

I think that is a little harsh. He wants to play, and to be fair, we played him too. It is just one of those things. I don't blame him.

Little harsh? I don't think so.

If hes preaching about not wanting to put his body at risk, then he shouldn't be playing competitive football for Australia when not fit - which he obviously wasn't because he never started a game for Australia in that competition.

And I think this may have been the wake-up call he needed to realise that. I am sure you have done something silly without fully considering the reprocussions.

It's one thing to compete in a competitive game, I think most players would jump at a chance to be in the national squad even if they've just returned from an injury.. but all these friendlies that he returns to are a bit much for my taste.

he's talking as if he's James Beattie's weight. I doubt very much it has anything to do with how heavy he is....besides doesn't building muscle actually make you weigh more?

*puts conspiracy hat on*

Does anyone think theres more to this injury than Everton are letting on? It made me think when Moyes seems reluctant to even mention Cahill after Metalist.

He added: "We have quite a few forwards fit at the moment but we are very short of midfield players with no Mikel, Pienaar or Tommy Gravesen which limited what I could do in those areas. But up front I have a lot options so we had to find a way of playing that fitted all the players."

Rumours are the bone he has injured in his foot is causing major problems whenever he jumps and they are trying to learn him a different way to jump to ease pressure.
