Now I am not religious at all, couldn't give a monkeys.

However, surely these reforms of the Church of England Monarch being allowed to marry a Catholic really does put the future of the monarchy in the hands of the Vatican.

The Pope is seen by catholics as god's rep on earth. (whatever), so if say a future Queen married a Catholic, and they had children and took on their father's religion, than that would mean The Pope would be boss again.

Not going to happen in our lifetime, and we'll probably be in an apocalyptic state by them, but still. It's all about being PC, and it baffles me.

That would assume that the monarch would be running parliment instead of being the ceremonial head of state that it is.

The real reform would be allowing the monarch to marry irrespective of faith or non faith. Somehow I don't think I will see that in my lifetime. It would be nice to live in a time when this institutional persecution of catholics in this country ends.

Constitutionally speaking, the monarch is the head of state. So unless parliament gave the pope power, he would not be the head of the church of England, which is actually a protestant church anyway, and not something I would expect the pope had an eye on heading.

Is the correct answer.

Anti-catholicism is still pretty big in Scotland, especially its western fringes.

I know mate. They're up to their knees in Fenian blood up there. :P

I used to study at Glasgow Uni and the number of times kids from Catholic backgrounds got knocked back for grants/bursaries who were well qulaified for them was unreal. Before he became a joke, George Galloway (the local MP for Hillhead at the time) did a roaring trade in scaring the **** out of the Uni's Senate threatening legal action.

What happened to Galloway? He went from a decent politician that seemed to fight the establishment to an out-and-out creep that crept around any group he was able to manipulate to find power. A waste of talent, a waste of a life. Respect my arse.

Egomaniac. His career peaked with that US Senate performance. He's one of those maverick figures the Left attract: their idealism fades with the buzz they get out of being thought a charismatic 'force for change' (see Deggsy/Sheridan for other notable examples). (y)

I think his career peaked sometime earlier when he was still member for Falkirk (I think). In saying that, he provided a fine swan-song against the Senate. A great performance by a very flawed man.
