Hi,

Just starting to learn some Chess, be good to relax me I reckon. Anyway, I'm on my Mac playing and usually if it Check Mate it says so, and doesn't let me move any pieces. But for some reason its not letting me do so.

I think it may be a bug, but maybe I'm missing something. So I have attached a screenshot of my board. I am the whites, and the computer has just attained a second Queen by taking the Pawn to the bottom.

And if that is your king in the bottom right, that is check-mate. The queen has you covered regardless of what you do.

You can't move you king and your bishop and queen can do nothing to prevent mate, so you are SOL.

Without doubt, assuming that's your king pegged in the corner. How did it get there, castled and hoped for the best? The machine might just be fed up beating you Ghost:P

hi ghost.

that board is quite difficult to read. looks like you have two queens and no king on the board!

if that is your king on the h1 square then it looks like curtains.

if you want to play online a superb site is www.gameknot.com

join up to this and enjoy a good global community. there is a rating system so you don't have to worry about playing a grand master every game. you can pick and choose who you play but if you stick to beginners you will have more fun.

if you want to challenge me my user name is teppic1

i'll talk you through the game and try to give you some pointers for future reference.

i run a chess club in school and have been playing since i was 8 so i have a passion for this game of kings!

Great, this is good.

Ghost as others have said that is checkmate. How you could lose so many pieces and just end up with a bishop and a queen is betond me. You should never have allowed a pawn to queen.

My advice would be get book on basic tactics and openings but also covering end game strategies. You can never learn to play chess by taking on your computer!

do what a lot of online players do, run a grand master game in the background, and implement your online opponents moves into the chess program so you can copy the grand masters moves in the online game.

i really rather dislike yahoo cheats.

yeah, that way everyone will think you are dead special at chess, until one day a ten year old challenges you to a game and your not on your computer and you get your arse kicked up and down the squares.

Opening moves and basic strategy (try not to move the same piece twice during the openings, take control of the centre of the board, castle etc) help, as do little chess puzzles (like finding mates in two to five moves).

A very elegant game. Got myself to a fairly decent standard, so I beat most people who play non-seriously.

There is always someone who can kick your arse at chess though.

Beware though: Chess is an obsessive game.
