Coffee houses - you know, Starbucks and co.

They're nearly as bad as Subway

I go to bits. Am not comfortable in coffee houses. Never have been, never will.

To say I am always massively overwhelmed is an understatement.

I get to this till and surrounded by a million weird cakes and biscuits. Looking at the price boards, theres drinks I haven't even heard of. Shots? Shots???? Whats that all about. caffé mocha? cappuccino? Whats the difference? con panna?, americano? and god knows what else.

The mrs orders cold coffee - cold coffee? wtf, it has ice in for crying out loud. I went mad and tasted it once - needed a meat and potato pasty to get rid of the taste. So none of that new iffy Americanised stuff. "Better keep it simple" I think. I scour the list...

Lattes? - They're a bit girly aren't they? The inevitable fit girl behind the till or in the corner will think am a woofter. Either that, or the lad behind will pass me his number with the drink. One of the lads from here ordered a latte once, think it was ToffeeDan or Reidy - the lad behind the bar wouldn't leave us alone after that - chicoazul ended up giving him a cigar.

Tea? - simpletons drink. Who orders tea in a coffee house? Will be massively judged as a belter.

So I usually just go for orange juice - thats in a fridge away from the til - but even then I feel a bit of a belter. I mean, theres a supercigs next door, I could have got orange from there for a 10th of the price.

Anyone else have coffee house paranoia?

Coffee houses have only started up around here recently......What I find is the exorbetant prices...Avoid em if I can...Mcds coffee is just as good. Having said that my trips to Amsterdam was spent largely around coffee houses:dodgy:.

My mate has similar fears. He just falls apart when he gets to the barista. One (typically fit) girl once asked him if he wanted 'a large or small' cappuccino and he just blurted out 'YES PLEASE!'.

Just ask for an extra strong black coffee.

Then sit on a stool sipping it while reading the paper.

People will think you are cool. Which you will be.

Cold coffee is for tramps.

Extra strong black coffee? - I would look like this trying to drink coffee without milk;

Far from cool (y)

In the 50s and 60s you could only get decent coffee at a Kardomah or similar. Or you perked your own (see recent thread about coffee makers - RBG posted a pic of the iconic french perc pot)

The seventies was an arid nescafe desert. Then in 1980, I walked into Owen Owens in Bridge Steet, Chester and smelled the feshly ground, real gold dust. Been hooked ever since and as I recently posted elsewhere, i can't start the day without a fresh columbian...

Starbucks sell poor coffee - there I said it.

Cafe Nero is OK but Costa, I quite like.

I don't understand the shots either, Danny. Or any of the other variations. I simply say medium black, filter every time. (Ithink them behind the counter calls it Americano...).

And I never order food in these places.

Best coffee is the stuff I make for myself - one desert spoon, filter, water off the boil. Heaven. Think I can hear the kettle now...

Coffee shops in Holland are superb, cant say I bother much in this country.

My thoughts are much along the same lines . Funny thing is in Holland more people drink tea as oppossed to coffee whilst in a coffeshop . Goes better with your ...........(y)

Nero's strawberry frappuchino's are ace but dear. Its beyond me why Eagles Meadow has a Starbucks, its always dead and if you want one that much buggar off to chester with your money to burn! Just buy a jar of instant from lidl!

Instant coffee doesn't even resemble coffee.

It takes longer for me to make an 'instant' than it does to make a filter coffee.

Scoop of coffee, cup full of water in the machine. Press on.

Fresh filter coffee ready in 2 minutes.

This is the beast. Best £20 I ever spent (unless you count that night at Shiffnall street).
