I am running on Windows XP home. I have emptied my recycle bin and found that a file in their was placed there by accident and so now has gone. Is there any way even so that this file can be retrieved from the hard drive.

Google system restore.

Also, if it's still in the recycle bin (unlikely i know) but you can right click it and click "restore".

Hi Danny It's gone from the recycle bin. What is Google system restore? I have tried my own computer restore going back into earlier dates but cannot still find the file.

I meant to "google" system restore (your own computer restore - which you have already done).

I'd have no idea then sorry mate.

it is retreivable, but it will cost you a lot of money for a professional firm to do it for you.

i had a partition magic (tragic!) problem that chewed up 30 gb of music i had, it all was lost, using data recovery software i rescued some parts and all the file names, but it was a real effort that took hours.

be more careful in future, and as was the advice to me - back up your important data.

If you Google "data recovery" or "file undeletion software" you may find something useful like this page:

http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/filerecovery.html

Note: never used it so this is not a recommendation. If it was me I would Google around the software provider to see that they are kosher. And, of course, have my Anti-Virus/Spyware protection on.

Also note that it says that you should use your computer as little as possible if you want the file to be undamaged.

And then you go and buy back-up software and an external hard drive and set it to run in the background.
