Seen people talking a bit about this so I thought it was worth putting up a topic.
UEFA - 13 teams qualified. 6 made it to the knock out stages.
Not really a great showing by Europe so far. Not only did only 6 qualify but only 3 won their groups. I'm not yet ready to claim that this means we're no longer the forces we were but its clear that if there is a gap between europe and the rest of the world its not a very big one. There's an argument that we get too many teams to be made, really.
CAF - 6 teams qualified. 1 made it to the knock out stages.
Awful showing by the african teams. This was supposed to be the world cup they all excelled in and instead they've just completely failed. Cameroon never got a point, algeria never scored a goal. Not pretty really.
CONCACAF - 3.5 places. 3 teams qualified. 2 made it to the knock out stages.
Okay so Honduras only got a point and looked out of their depth against both Chile and Spain but this is a good showing by the North Americans. Both USA and Mexico have looked handy teams.
CONMEBOL - 4.5 places. 5 teams qualified. 5 made it to the knock out stages.
The South Americans have shown their class it must be said. Chile are the only ones to not win their group and that was on goal difference. I heard some complaints, before hand, that it was unfair for them to get 5 places out of only ten teams but those guys have been shut up properly. Especially since there were three teams who didn't qualify who were within two points of uruguay. It's easy to remember that a South American team has won every world cup not held in Europe.
OFC - 0.5 places. 1 team qualified. 0 made it to the knock out stages.
New Zealand ain't embarrassed themselves to be fair. Worth noting they won a play off to get here, too.
AFC - 4.5 places. 4 teams qualified. 2 made it to the knock out stages.
Both South Korea and Japan look good. Both got their world cup first wins on foreign soil too. Asia look an emerging power, really and that can only be good for the game. If they continue to improve they'll have a decent case for winning more places from Europe or Africa.
