Aston Villa are top of the dogs - when it comes to pet merchandise
Aston Villa might be bottom of the Premier League, but they’re top dogs when it comes to selling pet products.
While Villa players appear to have lost their bite on the pitch, the club’s commercial team has jumped to the top of the league for selling the biggest range of items for dogs and cats.
In a week when thousands of Villa fans walked out during Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat to Everton in protest against the club’s owners, a survey of Premier League club shops shows the Villa Park side sells eight pet related items.
Woof deal: A dog in an Aston Villa shirtMaybe they are hoping their feline-fans are more fickle.
Merchandise ranges from a pet Villa shirt costing £4 to a claret and blue dog bandana for £6.
Bowled over: Villa fans have seen their side make a meal of Premier League survival this termLiverpool are runners up in the pet-friendly stakes. The Anfield club sells seven pet items online, including an extra large dog coat to keep out the winter rain for £15 and a retractable dog lead also costing £15.
Only five of the league’s 20 sides, Arsenal, Bournemouth, Stoke, Watford and West Ham, have yet to launch pet related items in their website stores.
Walkies: Remi Garde's side haven't held many leads this term
Despite playing for one of the Premier League’s least pet friendly clubs, Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez last week appeared in a Chilean dog food advert for Master Dog.
The Gunners forward is shown at home with his labradors Atom and Humber.
A dog's life: What pooch would want to be seen in a Villa shirt given their performances this season?
Manchester City are pushing towards the top of the pet league as the Etihad club sells five pet items.
The club’s star striker Wilfried Bony may also be able to boast that due to his surname he can lay claim to be the most popular player in the league for pets.
