Dave Watson appreciation thread

One of my personal favourite Waggy moments was his goal v Newcastle in the '95 QF.

One of the most celebrated goals I've seen personally at Goodison, and I've been there on my share of legendary nights.

That really was an unbelievable occasion that mate. I remember my sister and her fella turning up just before kick off, atmosphere was belting out and it just had that feeling we were going to win. That was when Newcastle had a very good side and we were massive underdogs.

I thought Watson was a superb defender, every defeat we had looked like it was a kick in the bollocks to him, it meant as much to him as it did to us on the terraces.

He also was caretaker manager which a lot of people forget at a truly awful time. Managed us a 1-0 win at home against Spurs ( game where Rideout should have left for China but played and then had to go on the back of a motorbike to get to the airport in time ). I think Speed scored that winner.

A big idol of mine, a fitting Everton captain who had the honour of lifting a trophy above his head wearing royal blue.

Anyone putting forward names like Gough or Stubbs or Weir as acceptable Everton CBs and leaders need to re-focus on Watson. I put those in a category barely above the Carl Tilers and Jagielka's of this world. He was the real deal. The last great. Everyone that's been here since is just us making do and mending.

How do you feel about Craig Short?

Only player I have ever seen lift a trophy for us, therefore a great for me.
Think you mean Captain not player - as they passed the cup round after Watson got presented with it!!!
I take your point though, and it's the same for me.

One of my first favourite players. His goal celebration of waving was great, or putting his hand on the scorer's head and slapping his own hand.

Him and Southall were the Everton defence for years.

Definitely a legend, mount field scored some important goals but wasn't anywhere near as good as Dave as a defender, he would put his body on the line every week, a great team player and captain.

I remember that Spurs game when we won 1-0, Spurs got a free kick just outside the penalty area with Teddy Sheringham lined up to take it. The free kick was delayed because some one was injured, Dave had put himself on the goal line ready for the free kick but Southall told to get off the line and put himself somewhere else. Then John Hills, who came from Blackpool, was sent from the trainers box right round to the back of the goal to tell D ave to get back on the line, which he did. When the free kick was taken by Sheringham he placed well, to leave Neville nowhere near it, but Dave was able to chest it down near the line
and save a certain goal and to help us win the game. Very good reading of the game. I think he was kept on by Walter Smith in some capacity when he came from Rangers to manage Everton. Dave was one of Everton's best centre backs and a credit to the club.
