Its simple. What date did Defoe sign for Pompey? If Spurs wait til the day after that date and then sign him there is nothing wrong with it unless he was signed on deadline day.

Im pretty sure they spoke to the PremLeague before they exchanged cash. And Spurs are paying 4m more, so its hardly a backdoor deal, some rules are pathetic.
