well easy to say "ahhh the good old days" right?

The trouble is, we often remember things with rose tinted glasses.

I was talking to my wife one night about something in the past and I said, "Ah, the good old days," or something to that effect.

She slugged me in the arm and said, "Now's the good old days."

I sure learned my lesson there. (y)

And summertime was hot as humanly imaginable.

Blackouts in the winter and the TV went off air at 10.00pm.

We signed players like Bruce Rioch, Colin Todd and Duncan McKenzie,Big Bad Bob....

do go on...

I'm surprised that I would need to indulge someone of your obvious intellect.
The rose tinted glasses must surely be removed. I fail to see the advantages there, if any. There was alot of racism and bigotry and casual violence.
Yes OK you get the scumbags thesedays, but they were just the spawn of that poor generation, 8 or 9 kids born to Irish immigrants who went round in the 80s trashing up Europe and whose world-renowned hooliganism got Everton banned from Europe.
People were just more acceptant with scum behaviour then, simply put. It doesn't make things any better or worse now. People just believe what they want to. Personally, I would say that we are ALOT better off nowadays. But that's just my sensible, informed and well-educated opinion. You are free to make up your own mind, of course.

In the scheme of things:

School 1977 v School 2007

Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.

1977 - Crowd gathers.. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up mates.
2007 - Police are called, Armed Response Unit arrives and arrests Johnny and Mark. Mobiles with video of fight confiscated as evidence. They are charged with assault, ASBOs are taken out and both are suspended even though Johnny started it. Diversionary conferences and parent meetings conducted. Video shown on 6 internet sites.

Scenario: Jeffrey won't sit still in class, disrupts other students.

1977 - Jeffrey is sent to the principal's office and given 6 of the best. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2007 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. Counselled to death. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra funding because Jeffrey has a disability. Drops out of school.

Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his neighbour's car and his Dad gives him the slipper.

1977 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college, and becomes a successful businessman.
2007 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. Psychologist tells Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mum has an affair with the psychologist. Psychologist gets a promotion.

Scenario: Mark, a college student, brings cigarettes to school .

1977 - Mark shares a smoke with the school principal out on the smoking area.
2007 - Police are called and Mark is expelled from School for drug possession. His car is searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario: Mohammed fails high school English.

1977 - Mohammed retakes his exam, passes and goes to college.
2007 - Mohammed's cause is taken up by local human rights group. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that making English a requirement for graduation is racist. Civil Liberties Association files class action lawsuit against state school system and his English teacher. English is banned from core curriculum. Mohammed is given his qualification anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario: Johnny takes apart leftover fire-works, puts them in a model plane paint bottle and blows up an anthill.

1977 - Ants die.
2007 - MI5 and police are called and Johnny is charged with perpetrating acts of terrorism. Teams investigate parents, siblings are removed from the home, computers are confiscated, and Johnny's dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario: Johnny falls during break and scrapes his knee. His teacher, Mary, finds him crying, and gives him a hug to comfort him.

1977 - Johnny soon feels better and goes back to playing.
2007 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces three years in prison. Johnny undergoes five years of therapy. Becomes gay.

Mostly the 2007 scenarios are not only more practical and sensible, but fairer.
Deluded people.

Funny cos its all true!

Looks like it came off the BNP website.
Is "Gay" a mental disorder? The one about the Muslim kid is from the "immigrants get it all handed to them on a plate by "do-gooders" school of thought. While I agree that PC has gone too far, I also think that those two scenarios are bigotry disguised as humour (now I'm not blaming you micknick because I'm sure you just copied and pasted that from an email).
There is a lot of talk about how things were "simpler" in the "good old days". Ah yes, the good old days when clerical child abuse was brushed under the carpet. The days when if a woman was raped she was afraid to report it because it "was probably her fault", when women stayed at home and made the tea, you could call gays what you liked and racism was acceptable.
At least we had a decent left back then all the same.

Oh my god- are you serious?! Yes it was a cut and paste but it was also meant to be a bit of fun.

I personally think that the PC brigade have gone too far and if we cant laugh at ourselves then who can we laugh at. I miss the days where at my parents house we used to leave the back door unlocked when out and I used to play football until 11pm under street lights. About a month ago I was in London and a group of guys were trying to start fights with anyone passing- one of them pulled a knife and was flashing it around like he was proud of it.

not just london, thats happened within eye sight on the way to a game at goodison.

only a couple of weeks ago i was walking home in the evening and some pissed up 15 year old threatened me, "im gonna hammer him as well" he said to his friends that both pounced on him and laughed, that he had punched every wing mirror on every car as he walked up the road should have got him the kicking of his life.
