ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

But then Rooney was a far better player at the age which Sterling is at now. I think so.

Rooney at Everton at THAT age was as good as you'll likely to see. You sat up and took notice, you couldn't help it. The way he played the game, everything. Incredible.

Man Utd melted him down and molded him into something else. Rooney has had a good career but had he not been melted down, he would of had a great career.

Nah you can't make sweeping statements like that. Rooney peaked early and then got fat & slow. That would have happened wherever he went mate. Could happen to Sterling as well! He's also got the touch of a Championship player. Sterling's touch and low centre of gravity are incredible.

He's so exciting - I can't believe they let him out of London. Gutted the Pool have got him :(

thing is as well, i swear in the early days most of them thought he was a bellend (fair amount of them with the david brent shouts an all, at least the 1s i know)

soon as they have a good season hes absolutely perfect and invulnerable to criticism.

is that really the way football fans work,, or is it just them?

I can mate and i just did.

When you break it all down, its clear as day. Utd wanted a certain type of player and Rooney was molded into it. Not saying it was wrong, as they reaped the rewards of doing that. As a player though, almost instantly, Rooney wasn't the Rooney we saw at Everton; getting the ball and running at defenders, very direct, ability to take a man on....

His game changed at Utd; instantly. Utd already had that kind of player. He gets the ball at Utd, he picks a pass; he is looking for others. At Everton; others were looking for him.

He was molded mate.

think blue4eva is spot on there... i think i remember fergie coming out with rooney needed to stop running about and just stay up top and 'play the role' so to speak. wanted him to just stay in the box and get goals because utd didnt need their striker to create chances out of nothing. needed him to play his role.

having said that, fergie did use him in different roles. do think he lost that 'phenom' aura that he had though. man utd just didnt need that maradona type player whod run the length of the pitch.

We'll have to agree to disagree lads :) He was, what, 18 when he left you? It's impossible to predict what could have happened had he stayed at Everton or joined Chelsea etc.

He's a terribly overrated player, always has been. We should have sold him last summer. He's not worth 100,000 per week let alone £300,000!

At euro 2004 he looked unstoppable until his injury. He was a far more exciting player at everton IMO, although he was still exciting in his first few seasons at united
agreed.

But a completely different player. Which whatever, fair enough, NEA.

When you look closely and look back; even his England appearances when he played for Everton were night and day compared to those when he transferred to Utd. Remember against Turkey ?

Absolutely hammered them. Single handedly ripped those turks multiple new ones.

Just a different player after Everton. Whatevs though.

Rooney has more talent in his little finger than Sterling has. I'm amazed anyone is arguing that Sterling is, or will be, a superior player.

If Rooney's love for the game that gave him a hunger, aggression and flair to go with his immense talent, hadn't been crushed underneath the mountain of money he was given at 18 and beyond, he would probably have gone on to be one of the game's all-time greats.

Even in his worst days at United he was still capable of things that reminded you how talented he is. The volley last year at West Ham, the ridiculous overhead kick in the derby etc etc. He can do things most players, like Sterling, can't. If he could be arsed, he'd probably do them more often, like he used to. He smokes though ffs. How not arsed can he actually be?

Rooney has too much mental baggage to be world class, shagging two escorts and living under the rule of COLEEEEN has ruined any ambition.
