Eriksson: City departure

Manchester City have confirmed that Sven Goran Eriksson has left the club by mutual consent.

The Swedish manager guided City to ninth in the Premier League in his first season in charge at Eastlands but there has been speculation about his future for some time.

City could not maintain their strong start to the season and owner Thaksin Shinawatra announced that he would consider Eriksson's position in the summer.

The club have now confirmed the news that they have parted company with Eriksson.

Chief executive Alistair Mackintosh told the club's official website: "The board of directors and all at Manchester City would like to thank Sven for his efforts and contributions throughout the season and we wish him all the best for the future. Sven remains a friend of the club."

Eriksson thanks

Eriksson added: "I have enjoyed my time at Manchester City very much indeed and in particular, I would like to thank the fans, players and staff for their amazing support over the season.

"I wish the club, and everyone associated with it, much success in the coming years."

City will make no further announcement until a successor is appointed but a number of managers have already been linked with the role.

Reports over the weekend suggested that Blackburn boss Mark Hughes had emerged as the favourite to replace Eriksson, with City already seeking permission to speak with the Welshman.

The likes of Luiz Felipe Scolari and Zico have also been mentioned, along with recently sacked Chelsea manager Avram Grant.

Eriksson has been tipped to take charge of the Mexican national team.

WTF after one season, Thought he done ok as well. You need at least 4 years at a prem club.

Now they want Mark Hughs. He'd be nuts to go their.

Well, he has been granted permission by Rovers to start talks with City. Looks like Mark Hughes is nuts!!!

Mark Hughes could really get himself [Poor language removed], hes got a brilliant job at Rovers, building his team slowly like Moyes has done and bringing through stars like Bentley. If he went to City and wasnt much of a success in his first year or even first few months, he could get the sack and his work over the past few years could go to waste.

Well at least we knowwhere Bentley will proberly end up.any one at Blackburn you fancy for the blues?

Idiot Taskin. Though hopefully dumbasses like him will keep us competive with teams who throughly outspend us.

I think Sven would make a decent manager on Chelsea. Mark Hughes is nuts if he wants that City job (at least they don't want Moyes!!) that team already is losing one of their their best players (Dunne) and may lose Richards as well; they are ripe for pulling a Leeds.

Get a millionaire bloke in like that turmoil erupts. Sven was solidifing this group not good enough then eh! We better watch what we hope for a Millionaire with no scruples can disrupt the whole organization look at what happening across Stanley Park. Patience is a virtue I like our way best.

I think Moyes is a much better manager but if he managed the team the 1st thing he would have done was solidify the team like Sven did and finished 7th-9th with that squad. So it would have been MOYES OUT!! at Man City. That's why Hughes is nuts if he takes this job.

Thaskin seems to have a touch of 'Jesus Gil' about him. If he sticks around, I really do feel for the City fans.
Any managers foolish enough, or greedy enough to test the man's patience, probably deserve all they get. The fans don't.
