Europa Conference League

Genuinely curious, what do you want then, for Everton? We're not competing for a title, and we've got to be asking for more than 8th every season.

It's another shot at a trophy, and gives us a further year in Europe if we win it.
Personally, I think we need the Europa League consistently to get us used to playing in Europe.

This Conference League is just a Mickey Mouse tournament that nobody will take seriously.

They should’ve just brought back the Cup Winners Cup.

I don’t want them to create leagues like this just so teams play Europeon football!
It’s farcical, are we meant to be buzzing ‘we’re in Europe’
The revenue will be next to nothing
It will have no pulling power for players
Being in this is not something Everton fc should be proud of.

I'm not going to turn my nose up if we end up in this. Use it as a development tournament for fringe players and youngsters. Better than sending them out on loan to sit on the bench somewhere.

Teams can drop out of the higher tournaments so there will still be a handful of good teams who end up in this. There will be some woeful sides but some good ones too.

It’s teams that will be failing to qualify from their Europa League group that will be dropping into this, so we may get Celtic as a glamour tie if we’re lucky.

We need 5-10 years in Europe consistently, before we can succeed in Europe.
All the experience we can get - the travel, the midweek fixtures, playing against teams with different tactics, playing in warmer, colder places, aggressive fans - all of that will give our players experience, and this mickey mouse tournament will help a lot. Also pressure of playing in cup games, say we get to the last 4 or finals of the UECL...I think it's all good. Anyway all this hypothetical talk - nobody refuses a place in Europe. We've got enough young players that need the experience it'll help them grow.

Hope we miss this rubbish, watch how well Wolves play this season without having this Europe League stuff to deal with.
I don't think Europe has had much of an impact in wolves being rubbish this season.

They've just been battered at home to Burnley when they haven't been in Europe for agess.

I think selling Jota and the injury to Jimenez has been the factor.

I'll take any form of European football that's on offer next season.

Teams in CL qualifiers can drop right the way down if they lose 2 rounds of qualification. I'd guess that will be mostly rubbish sides but we'll see how it works out.

I want us to push for 6th, but if it's this competition or nothing then I'd take it. Use it as a development tournament mainly and if we can get into the latter stages then look to go for it. We might not have to worry anyway because realistically we could still finish anywhere from 5th - 8th, and the lower end is more likely.

Amen.

Hate to break it to everyone on here but some absolute dross won the cup winners cup back in the day.

This is arguably the beauty of knockout formats. I'd like to see one in Europe.

TV doesn't like it because some years knockout competitions produce dross late on. It's why the PGA Championship hasn't gone back to match play, and it's why you don't see more one-and-dones despite the success of March Madness. It works for basketball due to the ability to compress the schedule and sell storylines. It doesn't work for golf because the margins from 1-64 are so thin, but only a few players are household names and the storylines just aren't there.
