European Coach Or British Manager ??

Sharpys top lip

Player Valuation: £60m
Since i was a young boy going to Goodison to watch the blues. The guy in charge was always the manager. He would do everything around the club from training to transfers to picking the teams on a match day. He would also so be involved in finance an how the club was beeing run. But this is a very British way.

In Europe it's vey different. They have a coach, an he picks the team an trains them throught the week. An thats it. The have a guy for the finance an a guy to look after players an also a head of football who buys an sell the players. All the coach does is works with what he's got.

This week has seen a bit of a shift in the british way. Keegan an Curbishly have both walked, why?. Because they had no say on transfers. Both were having players sold behind their back an players brought in who they didn't really want. But is this the way football in britian is going?

How would we feel if this happend at everton? If a billionair Arab came in this might be the way it happens. I have no doubt that this is what happend at City last week. I doubt sparky said i want every best player in the world. He didn't even meet the chairman till a few days later. But had bid for every star on the planet.

The thing with someone with that sort of money.....he runs the club. We might not be that happy with kenwright, but he lets moyes get on with it as much as possible. How long would moyes stay if the chairman was just bringing in players he wanted?

It's a dangerous game. What do you think?

I am an old school boy with old school rules. Manager running the show is the way it should be in my eyes. I doubt that it will stay that way, but until that fateful day then I am sticking to my guns.

I'm a fan of the coach method for the single reason that I believe the club as a whole need to have a clearly defined plan for success that should be maintained regardless of who is coach.

Obviously as with any organisation there needs to be excellent communication and general human resource management to ensure that firstly the right people are recruited and secondly that these people then all work together to achieve the goals of the club. I don't think it's possible now for one person to be in charge of all the things required at a club so it makes sense to spread tasks around people who have expertise in particular areas.

Bruce i agree with you to a point. The manager should now be a coach in britain. But i also think he should be the one who identify the transfer targets. An others should go an get them. I would prefere if moyes was incharge of the 1st team players an tactics, players to bring in an thats it. Now football is a milti billion pound orginisation we need to get it right. One person should not have so much say in everything.

But you need co-hesion right through the club for it to work. This has not happend at N'castle an W'ham. So the 'Coach' left. I just hope if we get a billion air he trys to do the caoch's job to.

Newcastle and West Ham aren't examples of well run clubs. I think the football director approach is the right way forward but the manager must be allowed to deciede which players come and go and he obviously must pick the team. Wage structures, transfer budgets and prioritising transfer options should be discussed between manager, chairman and football director. Freeing up time for the manager allows him to concentrate more on footballing matters like watching more games, tactics etc. I see nothing wrong in the footy director indicating to the manager possible transfer targets, after all this is what the scouting system has done for generations, but the final decision has to be with the manager.
As far as billionaire owners etc are concerned. If someone owns the club he can run it in anyway he sees fit. If he wants to pick the team and the players to buy there is f all anyone can do about it.
I'd love to see Everton bought out soley by the fans and run in a similar vein to Barcelona. Too late for this now though i think.

Well put walter, i do think this is the way forward. The only thing about fans runnung the club is were does the money come from?. Were struggling now as it is.

As for the billionair, we have to be very carefull. Don't care how rich someone might be. Don't want some interfearing fool coming in and [Poor language removed] everything up!! Just look at the [Poor language removed] across the park. We really don't want that.

We need to be really carefull in are next step as a club. We can't fall into the wrong hands. Ashley would be my worst nightmare as a chairman.

Whats scary is the last twice we have changed hands I have welcomed it first I thought as long as Johnson has the cash ?WRONG then I thought with Bill here's an honest blue who will take us on to further glory?Wrong But funny enough as much as I have slated him in the past and will probably do again Now dont tell the others this but I feel sorry for him at times:oI think his biggest problems are his advisers and speaking with out thinking.(y)

The problam is, we do need a new chairman to take us forward. We just have to be very carefull who it is. It can't all be about money. The right man needs to be found!!

How?

Not a [Poor language removed] clue.

I think Villa have got it right in that Lerner backs them to the hilt but O'Neill is in charge.

Lerner seems to leave the football related matters to those who know football.

That's the way I'd like to see it happen here if we were bought by Mr. Moneybags.

Nice quote from Mr Lerner, after taking over at Villa, at his first press conference was asked what his ambitions for the club were. He replied by saying he wanted to make them the biggest club in Birmingham.
