Moneybags at Real Madrid, Florentino Perez has been spouting a few silly things lately.

Daily Express | Columnists :: Perez’s plan is real deal for big clubs

Daily Express | Columnists :: Arrogance of Real Madrid's razzle-dazzle

"Perez has revealed that he wants to set up a European Super League to replace the Champions League. He is so elated by the way he has shunted Real back into the global headlines by launching the spending spree that has also landed Kaka, Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol – a defender! – he is not even ashamed to say he wants this new competition to ensure that the big, rich clubs do not have to worry about qualifying for it or being knocked out of it."

He says the current setup does not give any advantage to the big clubs!!! I thought that was what sport was all about, trying to beat the best! selfish arrogance of the so-called top clubs again.

Some interesting things about the early negotiations in the old first division, and possibly some truth in the comments on the Premier League becoming more competitive, but we want to play the Sky4 don't we, break into them not let them p*** off and do their own thing!

It got me thinking... who would really warrant a place in a Euro League if it was to happen?

SKY4,
Milan,
Inter,
Juve,
Real,
Barca,
Bayern
???

That's 10, who else? Possibly Roma, Ajax, PSV, Valencia, none of which are truly exceptional on a consistent basis.

So a perpetual league involving probably ten clubs. Any other suggestions? EFC the fifth best in th EPL?

I am affraid it will one day mate, when who knows but this will happen.

It won't.

FIFA wouldn't allow it.

It would destroy the domestic leagues to be honest. That and the only people that would watch it would be those supporters whose teams are part of it.

European Super League will never happen.

Don't hold your breath Bill. Perez has spent massively, he will be putting huge pressure on UEFA/FIFA to work towards anything that will get him a return on his investment. Week in week out international club matches will provide additional sponorship, advertising, endorsements.

The Ronaldo 'introduction to the fans' event was only the tip of the iceberg- Real must have made hundreds of thousands of euros that night alone - shirt sales, flags, scarves, posters, books, season tickets, advertising, sponsorship - all just for that event. He has spent a lot of cash and now he is printing more...

Besides that, we already have a format for the CL that nobody envisaged 25 years ago. The competition continually churns out cash for the big boys. They all want to continue spending big and need to create a bigger 'golden goose' to fnd themselves. I think we will see some form of super league within 5 years.

They've always had the European Cup.

Having a league that's made up of teams from various countries? Ok, who determines who's in it then?

Big can of worms if you ask me.

That's why it isn't gonna happen.

The arrogance of these clubs knows no bounds - they may quit their home associations and form an independent league.

Money talks, and they themselves decide who is in it, along with sponsors, advertisers, TV companies, who will decide which teams will bring in the money.

It happened on a smaller scale with the formation of the Premier Leagues in England and Scotland.

It may be total rubbish, but you can't write it off.

If Madrid don't win the League, Cup and Champions League, how long do you think Senor Perez and his Nazi scheme will last?

Well I think if they thought it would make them more money, they would break away from FIFA and do their own thing, a bit like what happened with cricket in the 70s. I don't doubt their financial ability, and I can see them having the guts too.

If it happened, would the clubs 'left behind' stick together, would there be a reaction and a move back to supporting your local team?

It will happen within the next ten years the bigger teams with deep pockets are going to want to move away to a super league. Multinational owners with teams such as Arsenal with hardly any home based players are just the tip of the iceberg. You can see this coming from a mile away just like Sepp Blatter does.
