Transfer Rumour Evan Ferguson

We have no idea of his personality, he could be a complete eejit who won't take advice and just takes the money.
Maybe. But also could be a very talented lad that just needed to find a club to call home and a bit of man management. We used to do very well with this kind of player back in the day.

If it's between this lad and Beto starting every week, then sign me up for this lad.

I’m not missing any point. I completely appreciate we need to buy young prospects for the future. (But also, if you read a lot of the comments those advocating for him are making, he is already top class, unplayable etc - he isn’t, which is why we are linked to him)

However, we can’t loan him, meaning we will have to shell what, £40m minimum on him? We are cash strapped and there is clearly still psr concerns flying around.

We also need a goal scorer for now, not for one in another 100 games time. And if we shell every penny we have on him, then how do we resolve any of the other positions we are desperate for and how do get the goals we actually need?

The summer will likely be a different ball game finances wise, but right now, we need players coming in that are going to do the business for us and ensure we stay up.
You do miss the point. We have needed a goal scorer since Lukaku left and have completely failed to find one despite spaffing money left right and centre. £25m buys a Beto type, £15m a Maupay type or Chermiti type. You talk as if there are better cheaper options that will come in, hit the ground running straight away and be our strike for the next 5 years. That’s a unicorn. Best case is we get a Jelavic type who does a decent job for a short period but then we are stuck with someone bang average for the foreseeable future. I’d prefer to gamble on the best player we can afford.

Buying a kid with a few good games and an alleged issue for a high fee is not where we should be at. Either the likes of Branthwaite and Stones, where we pay a small fee and hope to develop the player, or a fee similar to the £17 million we paid for O'Brien where the player has proven himself to be decent but may have an upside. Paying £40 million or more for players should not be where we're at unless we're buying an established player or selling a player to the club we're buying from for a lot more than that.
Do you think Shearer was established when Blackburn bought him for a British record transfer fee?

We paid 40m for beto and Maupay combined, 52m if you throw in Chermiti. We've gotten 5 goals out them in 2 seasons.

Not sure who you think we are getting mate for a fraction of say 40m if we had it available whose coming in scoring for us off the bat.
I’m not suggesting we are getting anyone for a fraction of £40m.

But spending £40m on a player that got 6 goals last season across 4 games and he failed to oust a 34 year old Danny welbeck doesn’t strike me as this top class talent everyone is making out he is. I mean comparing him to Alan shearer? No wonder so many young players fail to make the grade.

He may turn out to be fantastic, but there’s a big question mark about that.

Quite an exciting signing this if we pull it off

A forward thinking one that looks to the long term future

I thought many wanted us to move on from short termism?

They say that but then bemoan any sign of us showing future thinking it an ambition to sign players if it means we compete v other teams....

But seem happy with mid table dross

No mate, the Lukaku type goalscorer is a unicorn.

Lukaku is a one off striker for us since the PL began. And in general, clubs at our level, hell, clubs outside the top 6 don’t have strikers who score consistently like he did for us (Vardy being a huge outlier for Leicester).

We didn’t have a striker like Lukaku since the PL started. We have only ever had bang average strikers or the occasional flash in the pan strikers who manage 1 great season (yak, Saha, DCL).

People often compare to Lukaku as if we should be getting a striker of his calibre, they don’t exist barring a handful every season who generally play for the very top teams.

We need a striker right now that could get us 10-15 goals a season. Let’s not suggest that players capable of that can’t be found for under £40m. Other clubs find them for cheaper fees and then suckers like us come along after a season when they have been hyped by the media and offer 20x what they were originally bought for.

Ferguson “may” prove to be fantastic.
But he hasn’t really shown that so far barring a handful of goals has he? Like some are making out.

Funny thing is I think the first compassion I heard to Shearer was Shearer saying it himself.

Same stuff could have been said about Gordon to Newcastle btw, they paid for a player who'd not shown anything on a regular basis and who basically refused to train showing a certain unprofessional attitude doing so. But he worked out.

The markets changed mate, 40m doesn't get you a guarantee of anything these days.

I think you have to take the risk with his injury history and price tag, like many are saying goalscorers come with a premium these days, and might have to look at one who appears a bit faulty and take the risk

I think this depends completely on the price for me. There's going to be risk with a signing like this because he has had lots of injuries. But he clearly has huge ability so it could pay off too.

If it was 20-25m, I'd say it's well worth signing him.

If it was closer to 40m or more, then I don't see the value and the risk is too high for the fee.
