Everton and West Ham are locked in a tug-of-war for unsettled Nigerian striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni, according to local radio reports.

The Middlesbrough hotshot - rated at £12m - has been the source of constant media speculation this past week after it emerged the Toffees had sounded out his services.

The News of the World today reported that Yakubu will get his wish to move clubs, with his most likely destination being Goodison Park.

However, West Ham - backed by Icelandic tycoon Eggert Magnusson - are set to outdo Everton and offer the striker a massive contract to tempt him to Upton Park after discussions with Barcelona hitman Eidur Gudjohnsen stalled.

Yakubu has an impressive goalscoring record in the Premier League - second only to Thierry Henry in recent years - and his departure will put pressure on Boro manager Gareth Southgate to secure the signature of Spurs wantaway Mido.

Would be great if true! Kind of interesting that West Ham is after him as well. They will almost surely offer him more money, and it will show his worth if he goes for cash or for a better club.

Not that it matters much but the Iceland tycoon is named Eggert Magnusson not Magnus Eggertsson. (EDIT: Cheers - deliberate mistake honest ;) Lee)

AndI would very much like to have Yakubu on board, there is a lot of talk about Eidur Gudjohnsen is going to West Ham. Let´s hope he will go there and WH will let us have Yakubu. Iprefer Yakubu rather than Eidur......

take care,

Ari from Iceland

I think he wants to leave Boro. But for Pompey not us. Surprised the Hammers making a late bid. He might be swayed that way if the money is right.

Hows your bum for spots Mike, 20 years in the saddle is a long time, its good to be back mate.

One thing you seem to forget is that the Yak is Joey Yobo's room mate when on international duty, they are very good buddies and I'm sure that will sway him to us..

The more I think about this signing the less sure I'm becoming, will it stop, hinder or reverse the progress of our three youngsters. Would we be better looking for an Andy Cole, Hasselbank or similar on a six month contract until young Jimmy is up and running again, he is a better player potentially than the Yak was at his age. Skywalker will come on very quickly as well, he already has more league experience at Swindon than either Vic or Vaughan.

Is the Yak that essential, could the money be spent more wisely elsewhere????????????

Its not going to harm the youngsters at our club that we have a world class striker playing with them? Sure they'll get less time in the team, but think how much they'll have to learn and how much they'll have to step their game up.

To be succesful you need a good healthy pool of competition. Anichebe currently knows he's in the first team and no-one can take his place, thats not healthy as he can become complacent.

You need 4 good strikers for a seasons worth of games, and we dont have that, and we cant count McFadden as he's simply not good enough.

let them get as many players as possible. because they will all need paying, and they will all go out gambling together to get that 'upton park spirit' that has become so renown throughout football.

West ham might be paying the big bucks, but they've hardly got a great team there, their better watch or go the way that Leeds did.

Hmmm - makes me wonder if Gudjonsen (sp?) wouldn't be a better buy. Still has several years, but can play in the "Cahill" role as well.

Prefer Yak to Gudhjonsen. Even if Yak has lied about his age a year or three.. he's younger that Gudhjonsen.

And I've, for some reason, not really become a big fan of him.
