Everton Summer Transfer Thread - 2022

Chelsea are quite light in centre midfield really, so I don't think Gallagher is a goer for us.

I'm predicting both Gilmour and Winks on loan. Gilmour in time to be ineligible for the season opener, and Winks after nobody else tries to pay a fee for him on Deadline Day.

Signing only Gilmour would be too much of a risk, as there's every chance that he won't even get a game, whereas we know Winks is good enough to stink the place out every week.

This is the level we're operating at.
If we loan Gilmour he’d be ineligible for the season opener regardless of when we loan him.

Fair enough.

v Doucoure

Half as many blocks
11 less interceptions
34 less tackles
22 less tackles won
22 less aerial battles won

Doucoure played 6 games more so even with a weighting his stats are worse. Maybe Doucoure should be the 6 and we look for something different?
All depends what you want in that position.

Been clear from the Winks and Gilmour links that Lampard is looking for someone who can take the ball on the half turn and progress the ball through the lines.

A traditional "holding" player in the Carsley mould (for want of a better example) doesn't give you that, nor does more of a ball winner like Gana.

You look at City who've got Rodri who can do it all, maybe Declan Rice and arguably Phillips. Outside that, you've got specialists in being different types of number 6.

Gilmour gives you someone incredibly comfortable on the ball who is press-resistant and helps move the ball between areas of the pitch, whether that's by carrying the ball or by passing it, or even just recycling it. He absolutely doesn't give you the legs to get all over the pitch and press like a Gana/Kante, he also doesn't give you the defensive nous of a Gareth Barry (again for the want of a better example).

He's basically a "type" of holding midfielder which doesn't necessarily fit with what a lot of posters seem to want, but if you accept that the Winks links were genuine then Gilmour seems to fit pretty well into what Lampard sees as the type of number 6 he wants (remember Lampard played Jorginho as the holding player in a 433 and had Kante as a number 8).

Fwiw, as much as I think Gilmour is a potentially huge prospect, I'm actually not sure we are good enough to get away with playing this way. I understand the thought process behind it, but I can see patience wearing thin when the likes of Gilmour are exposed and overrun by the likes of Joelinton/De Bruyne/Bissouma/*insert strong, athletic midfielder name here*

Understand - ta.

As I said, I'd get behind him but certainly doesn't whet the appetite

Mad to think some people are hoping a lad who couldn't do the business for Norwich will somehow become our midfield maestro. That's how far we have fallen. Being lightweight isn't his only issue. He played 2 through balls in 24 Premier league games last season. Created 1 big chance and got 1 assist in total from his 1,136 passes (235 backwards passes / 337 forward passes / the rest sideways). He conceded as many penalties as provided assists. He had 18 shots in his 24 games with 33.3% of them on target.

Doucoure's statistics are better in almost every category when breaking it down proportionally. And he still gets a lot of stick on here.

I'd back him if he came to us but he isn't the answer for me. Norwich fans generally hated him and any Google of his name in relation to them is generally negative. So why is he good enough for us?

We're a far cry from NSNO these days.
There it is.

Pass completion stats, pressing stats mate, how'd they look per 90?

He asked me to quote defensive stats.

Passes and ball retention like who else in the league? Sounds like we want a crab if 71% of his passes are sidewards or backwards. Most other players with similar attributes offer more defensively or offensively.

You are kinda ignoring a very obvious thing though mate - who exactly did he have to pass too in that Norwich side - as we've seen over the years ourselves, if people don't show for the ball ahead if you then good luck trying to pass it forwards

And who do we have?

For the right deal I’d take Gilmour. It was a about a year ago that Chelsea fans wanted him to start every week.

He definitely has something. Which is more than we can say about our current options.

Depends how you categorise it.

At Chelsea Lampard played him a number of times as the deeper lying of three central midfielders. That doesn't make him a Fabinho type, more of a Jorginho. Don't get me wrong, he's not that level, but it's still a holding midfielder in my vernacular.
Hmm think it comes down to semantics but if you're thinking of a holding player I'd say you naturally think of more defensively sound players. I don't rate Gilmour highly in that regard but he certainly would help us get the ball from A to B

I think he’s wasted as a “deep” sitting playmaker. In my opinion, I’d rather play him higher up the park, with a good holding, defensive midfield sitting behind him. I’d want him closer to the attacking midfielders and forwards in the team.

And who do we have?
We finished 17 points ahead of them we they scored 23 goals all season mate. They conceded 84.

I'm hazarding a wild guess here that we have more than they do mate.

Gilmour was their scapegoat from early on, rather than looking at the players they owned who stank the gaff out every game
