CT, like most of us you will remember the lad who ran on the pitch in celebration leading the police and stewards a merry dance. He died the other year, his funeral was packed to the rafters with Blues showing their last respects, most never having met him. That was back in the days when some fun was still in the air, being a blue was being part of the team, it meant so much to us all and you know what mate, I can feel those days returning, the passion the love and eventually the respect.
I was 13 at the time. The morning of the game I went to the Hendon Hall Hotel (where one of the teams would always stay before the game) with a friend to see the players come out. Unfortunately it was the Wednesday players but, as a 13 year-old, I still had stars in my eyes as I watched David Payne, Graham Pugh, Jim McCalliog, Ron Springett and the like walking about, signing autographs. It was better for my friend as he was a Wednesday fan!
I watched it on the telly at his house and, after the final whistle I ran all the way home so I could celebrate without upsetting my mate who was, as you can imagine, gutted.
By the way, I found out (too late as it happened) that teams that play at Charlton always stay at the Marriott in Bexleyheath, just up the road from me. I want Charlton to stay up anyway but even more so now!
