Everton Youth Teams Thread

While we always had the odd one or two good youth players, the large batch we had in recent years has provided us with a good benchmark to judge our current crop by. Walsh and Ledson are good markers for judging the likes of Williams and Beni ( yeah I know they’re all slightly different) . Others like Nathan Holland, Delial Brewster can be used to judge our u18s , good in their age group but never able to push on even into our U23s . Dyson, Duffus, Henen, Grant are good past markers for the likes of Hornby, Sambou , Broadhead, Charsley - they’re all going to have to prove themselves at least better than the first ones mentioned if they’re going to make it with us.
I think we all recognise just how difficult it is to bring through Academy youngsters to PL level, the odds are always against us in terms of numbers likely to make it . It’s pretty easy to make yourself look clever by denigrating all the youth players, you know you’ll be right the majority of the time. Meanwhile I’ll continue to enjoy following the U23s/u18 for what they are , Everton teams that deserve our support and who actually have provided some of the club’s best results in recent years.

yep, very good points. I know a lot thought walsh, ledson and thinking back further fransisco junior seemed like they would make it. But it is a massive step up, for all we know they could be playing against loads of youth teams who are full of league 2/non league standard players. Then again, you see players like rashford and they could be chucked in at the deep end and be a surprise success.

The annoying thing for me is the amount of players we produce who are championship standard or get to the prem i.e. duffy, forshaw etc. We sell these types of players for pittance and then you see teams like united and the RS getting multiple millions for them just because of where they come from.

Look at that ward at the RS, what has he done to command that sort of fee? He's done no more than some of the youngsters we've loaned out and done decently at championship level. For example, if in jan we deide dowell won't make it here, how much will we get? £5m tops.

Personally think we'd benefit from encouraging more U23 players to go out on loan.
Be interesting to see what happens with Hornby and Evans this season - both had loan spells quite low down (Northampton and Morecambe if I remember) and, if they are progressing, they should be in demand from higher up. I would have thought Sambou should be making an impression in U23s this season since he is now in his 20s.

Of course, from our blinkered pov, we forget that there are scores of PL players being hawked about on loan so it depends if they are known about, if they fit the manager's plans and if they want to go. Which is what I suppose whoever has taken over from Joe Royle is doing.

Their team is seen to be at a higher standard than ours and people managers may feel that just because players cannot get into a hugely expensive team like Liverpool doesn't make them a poor player.
Unfortunately, after the poor season we have had the fringe players are simply not in demand... ironically they will probably be much better value for the buying clubs.

..I thought we actually purchased Hornby from Northampton. If I remember rightly, Evan’s loan spell at Morecambe wasn’t startling.

...and if there is a legacy of the Walsh era, it might well be the strategy of buying a few promising youngsters every season. They could well be the type who are more likely to come through (DCL, Holgate).
Yeah you’re right , though arguably this started before Walsh, but he certainly focussed it - from the other nights squad we had , offtop of my head Adeniran, Markelo,Galloway,Foulds,Adeniran, Bowler, Hornby, Sambou who came to us from other clubs and of course Gibson. We also do it with younger ages too, two 1st years Pedro Neves from Charlton and Max Thompson from United are examples and we’ve got a promising 14 year old who we got from PSG a few years ago.

And of course Virginia from Benfica/Arsenal who I thought had a stunning debut.

Nice little write up on Joe Williams.

Everton's forgotten man who could provide future competition to Morgan Schneiderlin

21-year-old is likely to move out on loan after missing much of the summer with a thigh injury

By the end of the week Joe Williams is likely to have joined another club on loan.

Bolton, Hull, Birmingham and Bristol City have all registered their interest in taking the midfielder on a short-term deal.

It's now up to Williams to make a decision.

Had fortune favoured the 21-year-old earlier in the summer, rather than deserting him as it has done on a number of occasions, then he may have been firmly in the first-team mix at Everton and those suitors from the Championship may not have stood a chance.

Instead, Williams will now use the second tier of the English game, where excelled with Barnsley, to build up his fitness, experience and a body of work to put in front of Silva.

The Everton manager was impressed with Williams in the opening week of pre-season and wanted him to be part of the first-team squad's training camp in Austria.

But the Huyton-born player picked up a thigh problem which kept him out for the majority of the summer and so Silva had to move on.

For now, at least.

Because what his season at Oakwell, and his 38 appearances in all competitions, showed was that Williams has the potential to break into the Blues' first-team in a key position.

For Silva, there may be no position more important.

The No6.

Williams has moved through the ranks at Everton, winning under-18s and u-23s Premier League titles, as a box-to-box midfielder - more of a No8 - but Barnsley asked him to play deeper.

“If you had asked me that this time last year I would probably have said no,” David Unsworth said, on the prospect of Williams playing as a No6.

“He was all-action, No8, box-to-box because he has incredible endurance but last year for Barnsley he was asked to sit in there and I went to watch four or five of his performances and they were top drawer, they were really mature and he did something I didn't know he was capable of by controlling a game, sitting there and so the answer to your question is: yes he can.”

Morgan Schneiderlin is the only player in the Everton squad who fits the profile, according to Silva, while it remains unclear how the manager plans to utilise loan signing Andre Gomes.

Williams, should he leave on a season long loan, could return next summer to a squad crying out for competition for Schneiderlin.

“He's a terrific player and I've been a big fan of Joe's from the moment he's been with us,” Unsworth added.

“He's been so unlucky, on two occasions with injuries, when he might have made his debut in the first-team.

“He had a great loan last year with Barnsley and then he had another little injury in pre-season which was so disappointing for him because he started off with the first-team squad and now he's going to have to build his blocks back up with performances for us.

“We'll see what happens by the end of the loan window and see if there's anything there that is attractive for him.”

The higher the standard of the first team goes the harder it’ll be to bring through academy players. Luckily the batch we brought through recently coincided with our first team squad being terrible.

I've thought to myself several times what would have happened if these lads had come through 10 years ago when we were skint and couldn't afford to go out and drop big money on squad players.
