That's true - luck plays a part in all player development. Injuries at an inopportune time, or too many of them, can stymie any progress.

For confirmation see Walsh, Liam.
I wonder if it’s a coincidence with Walsh though. He seems to be fine playing in league one and in the under 23s here but whenever he goes into the championship he finds himself getting injured. You wonder if it’s his size and he’s just not physically equipped to play at a higher level.

I think every player is different. In some cases I'd agree that it might be best for the player to stay at FF and train with the 1st team. In others, it's best they go out on loan, whether it's 'successful' or not - Gordon's inability to hold down a regular spot in the Preston team this time last year may well have served to open his eyes to what he needed to do if he was going to improve, while Lewis Warrington is undoubtedly learning more in these months at Tranmere than he would have done staying at FF, playing at a level which he had already outgrown. He may well have got to train with the 1st team, sit on the bench, maybe even set foot on the pitch if we were winning easily with 1 minute to go, but I think he's better off where he is, and then come back to FF and try to impress the coaches during preseason.

Some players could well be damaged by something like Gordon experienced at Preston, others would learn from it. Everyone's different - it's up to the coaches to work out what's best for each player.
Agree just think dobbin will want game time maybe frank will give him some time next season.

Walsh gets injured every year no matter what league or level, think he's had about 1 injury free season in his whole career

He’s managed considerably more games lower down though. 17 games in half a season in league 2 at Yeovil and 34 (out of a possible 36) games in a full season in league 1 at Coventry, while in 4 years at championship level the most games he’s managed in a season is 11. It’s possible that’s a coincidence but on the face of it it appears that he struggles a lot more - either with injuries or quality - when playing at the higher level.

That hadn't occurred to me - may be something in it or, as you say, just a coincidence. Whichever, he's been unlucky.

I’m biased when it comes to Liam Walsh so I don’t think it was lack of quality in his case but more that he was very unlucky concerning the amount of injuries he suffered, but as I say I’m biased inWalsh’s favour.

So , an article about the RS with a passing mention of how poor our Academy has become in recent years. Nothing new that hasn’t been discussed frequently in these pages. A bit more work and he could have written a useful article about a number of non-Sky6 clubs who have been better than us in recent years and what could be learned from them.
