Everton Youth Teams Thread

I think the coaching that you talk about is a big problem at first team level as well. It just doesn't appear to be getting done. Look how Stones has gone backwards this season. Hopefully we can't get a new manager in who can sort this out as I think we've got a group of youngsters who could make it over the next few seasons.
I think mori has gone backwards too

Not a great game but I thought our defence was strong throughout. Galloway would be my man of match, very sound defensively , missed a good chance to score , seems to have the habit of getting into opposing box but missing chances. Holgate had a good game too, Connolly did what he always does as a sound defender, started off as right back and moved to right CB, last game he started Left CB and moved to left back, all the back four positions in two games, incredible versatility even allowing for it being U21 level. The player who is really coming on nicely is Matty Foulds, looked good defensively and got forward from left back more and more in the second half. I think this was Baningime's first start at this level , may be wrong, certainly didn't look out of place and easy to see him moving up next season if/when others go out on loan.
It was disappointing from an attacking point of view, I was surprised that Lavery wasn't given some game time , Henen didnt really look like he would do anything. It seemed to confirm what we've seen most of the season, well drilled defence, combatitive defensive midfielders but apart from Dowell and Evans not really sharp enough in attack.
When Holgate went off , Connolly moved inside, Charsley to right back , Holland to right midfield . Although Charsley has played at RB in other games we had two defenders , Thorniley and Graham on the bench, not sure what their contract situation is but its getting time for hard decisions and they may be moving on.
I agree about the attack not being great. But Evans does impress me while the odd lay off, didn't come off. I thought his 1st touch was excellent and played some nice through balls.
And worked really hard for the team

bizarre that chelsea dont get to defend their youth champions league title next season as the commentator said earlier.seems a bit of a half arsed attempt at a competition by UEFA
Pretty stupid really. Chelsea can't win the U18 league to qualify that way, yet have won the UEFA tournament last two years. I saw most of the recent final when they beat PSG , both teams looked really skilfull, and better than both teams playing today. Mind you, if we beat City by 5 goals tomorrow and they lose their final match we win the league and qualify.....

Everton Under-21s concluded their league campaign with a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

Calum Dyson had arguably the best chance for the Blues, denied at the last second defender Jake Clarke-Salter.

Mateusz Hewelt, meanwhile, was untroubled in the away goal but did need to gather a couple of Kasey Palmer efforts.

He also saw a Ola Aina drive sail inches past his left-hand post.

But a point was just about fair for two sides who competed fiercely throughout the 90 minutes.

A quiet first half saw Hewelt save comfortably from Palmer’s free-kick before his opposite number Nathan Baxter did likewise from Joe Williams’ long range effort.

However it was the Blues who would carve open the best chance of the first 45 minutes soon after.Antony Evans sent Dyson clean through but after the striker rounded Baxter, he denied a certain goal by an excellent sliding challenge from Clarke-Salter.

Hewelt was then thankfully in the right place when an Aina strike from distance was diverted at close range by Chelsea substitute Tammy Abraham, ensuring it was goalless at the break.

It was much the same after the interval, with clear-cut chances few and far between.

Evans saw an effort hacked away in time by Ruben Sammut, while a combination of Mason Holgate andCallum Connolly kept Abraham from getting a shot away.

Aina fizzed a bobbling strike inches wide of the target as Chelsea enjoyed the better of the possession, Everton happy to try and break at pace.

However, Brendan Galloway was required to hurl himself in front of Palmer to stop the Chelsea forward firing home from close range, after impressive debutant Beni Baningime had done likewise to halt Aina’s swift break in its tracks.

Chelsea finished the game in the ascension, Palmer at the heart of most of their good work, but the Toffees’ rearguard held firm to secure a deserved point in the Under-21s’ final league outing of the campaign.

Really good achievement for the U18 and U21 teams to finish in the top 3 of their leagues.

In the U18 league we are up against Man City and Chelsea who have budgets massively bigger than us and are basically buying up any talent they can find from all around the country. All the talk about all their players being England eligible is true. However they are buying players from the likes of Watford and West Brom for millions as well as recruiting all the best youngsters locally. Whilst we'll have maybe 20 players in the 17-18 range they will have nearer 30.

It's not mate, but there are a couple of decent players.

They've got a lot better at stopping info getting out. I knew all about the current batch of U18s when they were playing youth tournaments /info from friends / twitter.

Barely know any of the names of U16 squads now. I know Charlie Ball was highly though of a year or two ago but no idea how he is progressing. We have zero members of the England youth squads now though which is a bit worrying.

This is spot on. We haven't had the credit for what we've done in the last 2 home games. We have given 4 local lads, (ie at our academy from before under 16's a league debut. Take the lot across the road, who are their last 4? Rossiter, Kelly, Flannogan and Mellor? You are talking we've given more debuts to local lads in the last 3 league games than teams like Liverpool do in a decade and probably Chelsea have done in a generation.

They have yes and clubs have too. Alex Denny looks a good player. We have been spoilt the last couple of years for under 18's and had the best in the country, we are not quite at that level and that shows with England representation.

I remember with Ledson's year there was a lot of buzz about a lot of our players and indeed about Everton generally. That isn't the case currently. That doesn't overly worry me, in all honesty if you produce 1 player to the ability of Davies/Ledson/Kenny/Walsh/Connolly/Dowell you are doing well. We have been lucky that we've had half a dozen over 2 years.

Yeah , unless you go along to the games it becomes detective work in terms of the u16s. I think we've had 4 appear in U18 league/ Dallas squads this year , Alex Denny, Fraser Hornby, Manasse Mampala and someone I can't remember! I guess we'll know more come July when the 2016 Scholars are announced.

It's hard to gauge the significance of inclusion in the England squads. It's great experience for the likes of Ledson and Davies to captain their country and we've had 9 players included in squads this season from U 18 to U21 - Davies, Holland , Yates u18, Ledson, Kenny, Connolly at 19s, Holgate, Williams , 20s, Galloway 21 s. Maybe Grifffiths too , not sure. But arguably three of our best young players for their age have not been included in their age groups this season - Dowell, Walsh , Evans.

It's often a question of style too, and our systems of 4231 has often been the same as England's allowing our young attacking full backs, Kenny, Connolly, Yates and our DFM s , Williams, Ledson, Davies to slot in easily to the system. So maybe it's been harder for Dowell, Walsh, Evans to stand out , and maybe the same criteria apply to other youngsters being good but not fitting the England system. There's no doubt results like the Dallas cup, recent wins by the u18s and U21s have all been founded on good coaching and excellent team performances as opposed to a few individuals ripping a team apart.... err apart from Dowell :)
