Reidy's Bottle Of Grecian

The Unobstructed View
bit of advice needed here.

my hard drive camcorder is full and there isnt room on my laptop to download it all, the memory on my laptop is pretty much full and i have had to put a lot on the D drive as the C drive is chocka block.

i have seen the seagate drives, passport etc etc.
i dont want a big bulky number just a small jobbie, i'm not even that arsed about getting a terrabit one as if somethin' goes wrong with it i will have lost everything, and lets face it 500 gig will hold a bloody lot of vids and pics, then if it's full i can get another and avoid the risk of losing everything in 1 hard drive.
there are also some that can connect directly to a tv i believe to view everything ? any experiences with these ?

i need to get this done as it's the lads birthday on sat and at the moment i am camless. so any advice would be well appreciated, my 1st instincts is to head to tesco/pc world and just grab what i see but thought i'd get you tech-heads to advise.

*note to dylan, i dont want to set up a server or something akin to a missile defense system, just a hard drive that would preferably be pocket sized.

Maxtor Basics 500GB Hard Disk Drive - Tesco.Direct

although i am tempted for this and it isnt much bigger in physical size
Iomega 1TB desktop hard drive - Tesco.Direct

some here at pc world as well
PC_World - Portable (2.5 inch)

any recommendations gratefully recieved, same with any ffs dont get that brand/size.

One tip - The name on the box is probably not that of the manufacturer. Only a handful of companies actually make them . Eg Lacie don't.

It's worth finding out whose disc is inside the box and checking to see if the actual manufacturer provides any free software support to recover data when the drive fails - as it eventually will.
You will need this as there will be nothing bundled with the disc and the company marketing it eg Lacie (as I discovered recently ) will just try to flog you an overpriced 'rescue programme' which if you look hard enough on the net you can get for free.

i got a 1tb from tesco for 60 odd squid, dont need to be totally portable tbh and the way memory sticks are going with capacity it wont be long before they are holding as much as the 250gb portables.

besides mb is for meffs
gb is for so called with it's
tb is for badgers.

i feels good to be part of the t-byte society.

Look into solid-state drives. The ones that use NAND chips to store memory (just like the flash drives). Quiet, low power, long lasting, reliable. Only caveat, they are wicked expensive right now as they are still a new thing. :P

now he tells me:D

this won't be on all the time tbh it will just be used to store pics and vids of the kids with frequently used stuff also on the laptop, all the vids will be burned to dvd, so will be a backup really
looks good though, nice brushed aluminium (pronounced with the i)

and is smaller in size than i thought as well
