Fanbase. Fans of a particular thing or person constitute its fanbase

Obviously, a clubs fanbase can only ever be estimated. How? - I can only speculate.

Would Facebook be a good method? Wry smile? Think about it. Theres going to be exceptions but the amount of fans latched on to an official Facebook page can surely give at least an indication of size?

Just looking at a few clubs who have official Facebook pages and looking at the amount of fans;

Arsenal : 611,437 fans
Aston Villa : 38,281 fans
Chelsea: 532,842 fans
Everton: 34,554 fans
Liverpool: 1,162,006 fans
Man City: 78,908 fans
Man Utd: 368,355 fans

Theres going to be exceptions, such as the amount of time a page has been in existence, but these aside - does anyone find the above slightly odd? Theres no way Man City have twice the fanbase of Everton, or Arsenal having near twice that of Man Utds.

I'm trying to think of exceptions to explain the mass difference. Time? Well Everton boast to be the first club to launch an official Facebook Page. Promotion? Everton actively promote the clubs Facebook, I mean - take a look on the official site, it's a lot easier to find than some of the other listed clubs.

So I'm struggling to explain the numbers. Any suggestions behind the figures?

Exposure mate.

Citeh are all over the press rightly or wrongly, about the football, the cash, the chase for 4th etc, and I guess they attract people all over the world that dont really like or follow footy but will latch on to the "new" thing on the block.

Case in point....the RS having over a million and Man Utd getting less that a million.

The only abberation in all that is United, which is a puzzler. If United had the same/more than Liverpool those figures would make sense. City are the new flavour of the moment, so the passing flaneur latch on to them and inflate their numbers.

I'd be surprised if the Everton fan page was the first as the one I created had around 15,000 fans before the official one was born.

Maybe not the first (is there a way to find out the date a page started?) but we wouldn't have been far behind, considering we proudly claim to be the "First club to have its own online social networking site." on our historical firsts and;

Facebook Application – Social Networking – Interactive – evertonfc.com – The Official Website of Everton Football Club

In December 2007, Everton became the first Football Club in the country to introduce its own official Facebook Application.
Different things I know, but the club have always been eager to push the social media lark.

These two adverts are displayed on every official website page;

And one even on the home splash page. I'd say we push Facebook more than any other Premiership club but the numbers don't show it. Visit the Villa website (more fans than us) and you won't see that http://www.avfc.co.uk/page/Home/0,,10265,00.html

I think our fan page was started a few weeks before the club created the app.

Back the original question though it is very odd that Villa have done so well out of it. Maybe they've run some competitions or something to attract the fans. Hard to tell without any kind of knowledge of their pages.

Having just double checked, Villas isn't even official :lol: It's no wonder theres no mention of it at all on their website.

The other day they published this

Aston Villa | Football Club | News | Club News | Club News | Join Wembelieve

Crazy stuff.

On an unrelated and petty note.

The club have done an iphone app and not an android one, the bad Ghost loving weapons.

They do this all the time, they make loads of mistakes, it's all KenWRONG/BELLstone/Moyles fault etc.

when i get mine i'm gonna map it on google, and add it on the layers with info and an arrow, things like 'large scruffy unshaven bloke' for goat. anyone can upload stuff for the layers. the people can map the place, for the people. i'm gonna map sayers and tootles as recommended eateries.

i haven't even got a facebook account, my status would just say... on g.o.t.

That bold section is incorrect.

Everton were the first club to have an official facebook APPLICATION.

Not a fans page.

That didn't appear until 18 months after the other clubs had theirs. (January 2009).

Its viral marketing boys. Little investment for high return. - thats business.

If you want to read anything academic on the subject of having "one page" for all your necessary info - read up on the fundamentals of informatics.

I got an email from EFC that said they did the iPhone app because Apple were giving them priority advertisement and other spin offs.
(Its also in the top 50 apple iphone apps list)

They were going to look at other smart phone apps in 2010 possibly.

You will be amaze how fans in asia switch or pick a team to support. MONEY plays an important part. Home town and family tradition means nothing when it comes to finding a team to support.
The deciding factor are who is playing for them, their playing style, how successful are they on the pitch, their ambition and the club's pocket.
I'm not too surprise Man City had more numbers than us.
