Player Valuation: £40m
After starting last season in the Champions League and seeing our dreams and all our hard work from the previous season fade away it took some time to get confidence back in the team, finishing the season in 11th place.

In the summer we saw three new faces Andrew Johnson, Tim Howard and Joleon Lescott. I was convinced Johnson could be a major hit for us but I wasn’t to sure on the other two signings, Manchester United fans weren’t convinced by Howard’s antics in goal and Joleon Lescott was unproven and was a serious doubt over passing a medical test because of serious injuries in the past.

The season kicked off with Watford at Goodison Park and a strike partnership from Heaven with James Beattie linking up well with AJ for his goal, however the game wasn’t the most convincing as it took us far to long to break down Watford throughout the game, then the next game at Blackburn saw us go behind and it took till around 15 minutes from behind for us to get that goal that never felt like coming. It felt like a winner and you could see how much it meant to the 6500 travelling fans at Ewood Park.

After that the season just got better and better with victories over Tottenham at White Hart Lane somewhere we hadn’t won for 21 years and then a 3-0 victory over arch rivals Liverpool and after the depature of fans favourite Duncan Ferguson last season we instantly found another in Andy Johnson who went on to score 11 goals in the debut season, we recorded one of our most successful victories over Liverpool in the last 40 years.

The team has once again been able to compete on the same level with the top four, grabbing a point at the Emirates and Anfield, whilst beating both Liverpool and Arsenal at home whilst pushing Chelsea and Manchester United close (losing 3-2 and 4-2) however that’s where the team let themselves down by gaining only a point from teams such as Manchester City and Aston Villa and drawing with Wigan at home.

Up game the 28th October and a trip to the new Arsenal stadium, I feared the worst after getting beat 7-0 by the same team around 18 months ago but the team showed belief and a Tim Cahill header put us in front but the lack of players we had showed as Arsenal brought superstar after superstar on whilst we packed the bench with youth and players not good enough for the first team.

The season was only a couple of months old before the size of the squad showed we lost key players through injuries such as Tim Cahill, Andy Johnson, Nuno Valente but come through key results that define the spirit of the team, every single player wanted the win in games such as Bolton 1-0 and West Ham 2-0 with the second goal coming from teenager James Vaughan who returned from 15 months out with a serious injury which nearly forced him to quit the game altogether. Then only a couple of weeks later the other striking teenager Victor Anichebe bagged two goals against Newcastle which saw the team rip apart a team of underachievers and no spirit.

New years day came and a stadium with no luck for us, City of Manchester and the team crumbled with two samaras goals (the last city goal and win was against us) a goal from Leon Osman added a more respectful tint to the game and in the last minute a blatant penalty was waved away, like so many this season, you only have to look at the head of Refs confirming 8 out of 10 should have been given and then Manchester United couldn’t concede one if they tried their hardest to, it shows the difference between the top four and the rest of the league.

We were embarrassed by a 4-1 cup defeat to Blackburn with a comedy of errors which then set us on a run of four games unbeaten until the Tottenham game, a substitution by Moyes bringing on Tony Hibbert for Manuel Fernandes whilst drawing 1-1 was seen as a negative tactics and was greeted by boo’s for the remaining five minutes before Jenas scored a winner in the last minute which saw programmes thrown towards the dugout in disgust, I for wondered if that was that for Moyes, if his negative tactics would backfire on him, I did doubt if that was the furthest he could take us whilst manager but he regrouped the team and went on a seven game unbeaten record including last minute winners against both Arsenal and Charlton.

A great season ended with sadness as news filtered through Everton legend Alan Ball had passed away at 61, however he would have been proud of how well the team conducted themselves and near enough secured Europe with a 3-0 victory over Portsmouth.

This season has been my most enjoyable season, breaking records against Tottenham and Liverpool whilst other convincing victors against Watford, Fulham and Portsmouth brought us with the best goal difference outside the top four with +16, the season we finished fourth it was boring games but this season we have played some brilliant football with players like Arteta and even on loan midfielder Manuel Fernandes added to the great skill and football that was being played.

It’s been an amazing season, I’m eating humble pie but it tastes delicious.

My player of the season – Joleon Lescott

Other mentions – Mikel Arteta, Lee Carsley, Tim Howard, Joseph Yobo

Biggest Disappointments – Leon Osman, James Beattie

Great read cal, especially highlighting the ups and downs (you could have stressed more how badly the draw at city hurt feckin richards!) :D

Love your honesty mate :D

Good review. Just about covers everything. Although the part about the great footie should have been expanded to encompass McFadden's wonder goal and Arteta's beauty solo goal against Notlob.

In my opinion ;)
