The Daily Mail is reporting that Portuguese midfielder Manuel Fernandes has arrived in Merseyside to complete a transfer to Everton in a deal that could rise to £8million.

In a day of frenzied speculation, the 21-year-old highly rated Benfica player should tie up a deal which will see him become Evertons third summer transfer after the capture of Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka.

Club official Ian Ross had earlier been quoted as saying the deal could be wrapped up within 24 hours and this now looks increasingly likely as the Portuguese international arrives at Goodison to complete a sensational move that will cost Everton £6million up front with a further £2million in add-ons throughout the course of his tenure at the Toffees.

Although extremely unlikely to be in the Everton side to face Tottenham on Tuesday night, the talented player will give a huge boost to a side which has the smallest amount of senior playing staff in the Premier League as they battle to progress in the UEFA Cup this season.

The developments in the Fernandes saga came in quick succession on Monday night as Everton moved to ensure the player would not become cup-tied if he played in Benfica's Champions League qualifier against F.C. Copenhagen.

In other news, Evertons pursuit of Nigerian hitman Yakubu Aiyegbeni is not over by a long shot, according to reports. Chairman Bill Kenwright is set to make an improved offer for the Middlesbrough player within the next few days as Everton look to bolster their fragile front line.

Have Everton seemingly secured one of the world's top young players ahead of a season of high expectations, or have we overpaid in an atmosphere of frantic panic buying as the transfer window approaches it's end?

this is just fantastic news , imagine.. turns up at white hart lane... gets in the squad.. and scores the winnner

i never dreamt of ever signing a player like fernandes... so who knows what dreams can come true !

Fernandes has potential without any doubt but is he worth what we are about to pay for him, my heart says yes but my head says no. In his time with us he spent long periods doing absolutely nothing, when he sprang into life he was a joy to see. I can only assume that DM is sure that he can increase his work rate and become the great star so many, apart from Benfica and other G14 clubs, belive he can be. If that is the case then his sell on value, because that is what will happen (see Trevez), will be good business. These players have little say in where they play, they are owned by others and as such have few loyalties.

It would be extremely good PR if the club remained totally transparent with all its negotiations throughout this deal, knowing our luck we'll own the 50% that has no legs:lol: unless of course the other owners sell their share as well.(y)

I would be quite happy if we sealed a deal for Manny. And remember a month ago we were all consigned to the thought of losing him.

Fernandes is inconsistent when he is playing well hes great, but sometimes he can be a bit lazy and careless, but these things could improve in training...

I think this will be a great buy, for everton now and in the future, as i think we could make a large profit on fernandes...Benfica obviously dont want to lose him becuase they know how good he will be in the future

I have read in numerous forums how Arteta showed skill, but no work rate, on loan. Look at him now. I know Moyes has his failings but his major strenght is getting people to work for the team(except Beattie for all you cynics). This guy will be brilliant in the right midfiled.

Just looking at the fernandes skill vs arsenal and portsmouth on youtube...
Best Signing of 2007 if we get him, his passing is great wihch is what we need, becasue we need players in midfield who can pass it to johnson, instead of hoofing the ball...

He is suposedly in town as I write, some sites saying he has booked into the Radison(y) A2bChris, what's the word on the cabs mate????

According to some of the reports I read, we are also buying the other 50% and, indeed, reading between the lines, I would think it was them that instigated the whole negotiations when Benfica were quite happy keeping him there.

That would have been an interesting proposition if we had bought the other half first, could we have then said he doesn't play at all and then offer Benefica a quid for their share;) These deals are a bag of worms Art b)
