The Daily Mail is reporting that Portuguese midfielder Manuel Fernandes has arrived in Merseyside to complete a transfer to Everton in a deal that could rise to £8million.
In a day of frenzied speculation, the 21-year-old highly rated Benfica player should tie up a deal which will see him become Evertons third summer transfer after the capture of Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka.
Club official Ian Ross had earlier been quoted as saying the deal could be wrapped up within 24 hours and this now looks increasingly likely as the Portuguese international arrives at Goodison to complete a sensational move that will cost Everton £6million up front with a further £2million in add-ons throughout the course of his tenure at the Toffees.
Although extremely unlikely to be in the Everton side to face Tottenham on Tuesday night, the talented player will give a huge boost to a side which has the smallest amount of senior playing staff in the Premier League as they battle to progress in the UEFA Cup this season.
The developments in the Fernandes saga came in quick succession on Monday night as Everton moved to ensure the player would not become cup-tied if he played in Benfica's Champions League qualifier against F.C. Copenhagen.
In other news, Evertons pursuit of Nigerian hitman Yakubu Aiyegbeni is not over by a long shot, according to reports. Chairman Bill Kenwright is set to make an improved offer for the Middlesbrough player within the next few days as Everton look to bolster their fragile front line.
Have Everton seemingly secured one of the world's top young players ahead of a season of high expectations, or have we overpaid in an atmosphere of frantic panic buying as the transfer window approaches it's end?
