The 10th international Arab Cup began yesterday in Qatar - the first to be held under FIFA's jurisdiction.

16 teams:
Tunisia, the favourites who won their opening game 5-1 against Mauritania.
Iraq, who drew their opening game 1-1 with Oman.
UAE started with a 2-1 win against Syria.
Qatar beat Bahrain 1-0 in a tight game.

Today we have Algeria expected to beat Sudan, Egypt expected to beat Lebanon, Morocco expected to beat Palestine, and Saudi Arabia, favourites to beat Jordan.

I'll be cheering on Palestine and Jordan - they are in the same group so looking forward to their clash on 7/12.

Games available on You Tube - FIFA tv. Algeria kick off at 10am.

Yesterday's results:
Algeria 4 Sudan 0 - watched 15 minutes of it but Sudan were really poor.
Egypt 1 Lebanon 0 - Lebanon battled hard but were outclassed - wasteful finishing by Egypt who needed a penalty to score - pity Salah wasn't playing for them.
Morocco 4 Palestine 0 - Morocco different class, Palestine did well to keep the score blank for 30 minutes.
Saudi 0 Jordan 1 - needed a deflected goal but a positive Jordan were always on top against a young Saudi team.

First big shock of the competition last night when Syria beat highly-fancied Tunisia 2-0 with goals early in each half, the first a goalkeeping error, the 2nd probably unstoppable. Nothing went right for Tunisia who controversially had a man sent off on the stroke of half-time, for elbowing. Tunisia will likely have to beat UAE in their final game to qualify - UAE top the group after beating Mauritania 2-1.

In the other group, Qatar scored their 2nd win after beating Oman 2-1 with a freakish injury time winner that VAR ruled to have just crossed the line, while Iraq and Bahrain played out a goalless draw.

The north African teams looks class above the gulf states even though the Africans (Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia) are effectively fielding there 2nd string.

Morocco look class as they should as the defending champions but Egypt, Algeria and the UAE look decent too.

Yesterday saw Jordan unable to reproduce their 1st round heroics as they were lucky to lose only 4-0 to the impressive Morocco. In the same group, Palestine earned their first point in a thrilling 1-1 draw with what was a Saudi u23 team, who made 8 changes after losing to Jordan. All now on the final group games with Jordan-Palestine an even more enticing prospect.

Things are clearer in the other group where Algeria and Egypt have both qualified and will be battling for top spot when they meet on Tuesday. Algeria overcame a dogged Lebanon 2-0 while Egypt thrashed the worst team in the tournament, Sudan, 5-0.

The first two groups were completed yesterday with the drama reserved fro Group B where Syria blew their chance to qualify, losing a dramatic and tense game to Mauritania 2-1. With Syria needing to win to qualify they were locked at 1-1 as the game entered injury time. Then came a moment reminiscent of what we were to see with Richarlison's goal last night as a shot from distance cannoned back off the bar but their striker couldn't control the header and it looped over the bar. Mauritania promptly went down the other end and scored the winner. In the other game, Tunisia recovered from their shock defeat by Syria to beat UAE 1-0, finishing top on goal difference.

Didn't see the evening games (otherwise occupied) but hosts Qatar claimed their 3rd win by beating Iraq 3-0, while Oman beat Bahrain by the same score to qualify.

Big local derby this afternoon: Jordan v Palestine with both teams in with a chance of qualifying.

The best game of the competition so far saw Jordan eventually thump Palestine 5-1 to qualify for the next round. The scoreline suggests a massacre but it was far from that as, for the most part, Palestine gave as good as they got as they sought the win that would have seen them through. While the game may have lacked the sophistication and physicality of the Premier league, we were treated to two well matched tams going at each other often in a gung-ho fashion that could easily have resulted in double the amount of goals we ended up with.

Jordan took an early lead when a weaving run by man-of-the match Mohammad Abu Zraiq, known as Shahara (spark), was ended by a reckless Holgate-like lunge by the Palestinian centre-half - penalty, 1-0. Palestine came storming back and should have levelled a few minutes later when a low cross from the left reached the far post where the Rondon lookalike, Salem Khaled, lumbered in but completely missed his kick with the goal gaping before him. It was to be the first of many head in hands moments for the Palestinians.

The game flowed from end to end but Jordan doubled their lead in the 24th minute when a good move down the left saw the ball pulled back from the dead-ball line for the unmarked Aldaradeh to poke home from close range. This only encouraged Palestine to throw more men forward but the otherwise impressive Seyam squandered another golden chance with a comically mishit finish. Happily, he made amends just minutes before the interval with a leaping header from a left wing cross. Palestine back in it.

The 2nd half began with Jordan, having been pushed back in the closing stages of the 1st half, looking to get back on the front foot but the game remained wide open with chances at both ends. Gradually, though, Palestine got on top and in the 72nd minute it looked as though they had the equaliser they deserved when Seyam turned in a low inswinging cross from the left. Unfortunately the linesman had his flag up for offside against the player who'd crossed the ball. Even on the replays it looked level to me but they are using an experimental semi-automated technology for offsides, so no-one could argue, but several devastated Palestinian players were down on their hands and knees at the decision.

Jordan made the most of their reprieve and with 8 minutes left a shot from inside the bow deflected off a defender and spun like a Shane Warne googly into the far corner of the net. Two more goals piled on the agony for Palestine and both sides missed chances for even more goals before the final whistle. Tough on Palestine, but Jordan deservedly through for being that bit more clinical and slightly less naive.

The other game in the group saw Morocco beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 with a penalty just before the interval.

The qualifiers from the final group had already been decided so Algeria and Egypt were battling for top spot - it finished 1-1 and with identical goal difference it was decided on 'fair play' - going into injury time both teams had 3 bookings but the referee booked an Algerian, then sent another off, so Egypt finish top. The other game saw Sudan deservedly claim the wooden spoon as they lost for the third time, 1-0 to Lebanon.

Quarter-Finals
Tunisia v Oman, Qatar v UAE, Egypt v Jordan, Morocco v Algeria.

QF Results
Qatar 5 UAE 0 - massacre, all goals in 1st half.
Tunisia 2 Oman 1 - Tunisia deserved winners but made hard work of it.
Egypt 3 Jordan 1 - AET 90 mins 1-1 Jordan better side early on, took lead, forced Egypt keeper into more saves in 1st half than he'd made in previous games combined. Then a shot hit underside of the bar, cannoned onto the post and bounced to safety, would have made it 2-0. Egypt managed 1st concerted spell of pressure towards the end of the half and equalised just before the break. Egypt gradually took control in 2nd half as Jordan tired. By the end and in ET they were hanging on for penalties but 10 minutes into extra time Egypt deservedly took the lead and added another with a minute to go. Class and fitness told in the end.
Morocco 2 Algeria 2, 90 mins 1-1. Algeria won 5-3 on penalties. The favourites are out. Algerian led twice but couldn't hold on. Even, end to end game. Spectacular 2nd goal for Algeria, questionable goalkeeping.
