Football Guardian readers, I am urging you to action. Do we want to look like idiots? Do we want Times & Telegraph readers walking past us with a smirk on their faces, or worse still a rueful shake of the head, sad to see a distinguished rival fallen so low?
Steven Gerrard (undoubtedly a fine player) is currently 4th in the greatest midfielders poll and thus stands to be included in the Guardian Readers Greatest Ever 11. Now while I will agree that his FA Cup winning goal v West Ham was one of the most dramatic ( and well struck) goals I've seen, and his performance in the Champions League final was inspirational, I have to say that half a dozen misplaced Hollywood passes per game does not a Greatest Ever Midfielder make.
For the sake of the credibility of the Guardian, us the readers, and yes Democracy itself, get over to the poll and vote for Leo Messi (even though Best was a better midfielder, but let's not complicate matters more), or if you've already voted, email your colleagues, your sisters, lovers, grannies or dogs & get them on the case.
Ladies & Gentlemen, to your keyboards!
