Been thinking about what I'm going to do in the future as I'm 19 and some of you may know I am working as an IT Techy. Absolutely hate it.
Anyway, I always think about what I'm going to do in the future. My Uncle has got a few businesses like and they have worked very well for him. He recommended that I carry on doing what I am doing now and when I have enough money I should buy a franchise, he said something like a restaurant or a takeaway place like Papa Johns/Dominos, he owns a Papa Johns somewhere in London and is pretty wealthy.

Any advice? Is it really worth taking the risk?

I'm not Mick lads don't worry!

Not sure about the UK, but the problem with franchises in the US is that they generally have such a high minimum capital and net worth requirements that you kind of need to have the money to make the money.

Really turnkey operations otherwise, and a lot of your marketing gets done for you, but I don't see how you can start off as a small business owner with franchises.

In the US I know Subway sandwich shops are very cheap to open compared to other franchises, but that's also a big part of the reason why the country is so saturated with them. Chances are they already exist in all of the good locations.

I don't really know the full working of franchise operations

but as GJ alludes to here

it's probably location which is key

I looked at subway franchise I think you need to invest about 75k first, obviously this comes from a bank if you are not Bruce Wayne..

The main high street franchises require a large capital outlay & a further wedge of operating capital. I looked into a few of the larger ones a few years ago & at the time you were looking at £125k minimum to buy into a McDonalds, with the requirement that you had about the same again in operating capital.

There's many relatively low cost franchises on the market though & if you're serious go to the National Franchise exhibition next October at the NEC & you'll be able to look at the entire spectrum of what's available.

Baring in mind I have never looked into this, but how much actual subject knowledge would you need to have? I know that McD franchises are pretty prescriptive in how everything needs to be done, but even so I'd imagine having some experience running a food operation would be beneficial?
