2022/23 Frank Lampard

You're going to struggle if you think I want Lampard to be anything other than a success here.

But I wont turn a blind eye to tat like that last night, and most of all his undoubted part in it. That was ultimately a failure in strategy which created so many poor individual displays.

He needs to knock it on the head asking these players to move the ball around to feet against decent opposition who are counter attacking by nature anyway.

It was a hare-brained scheme and he takes the rap for it.

Sorry Dave, but I've seen you roll out agendas that were seasons in the making, the writers of Succession would be proud of the work done

This new I Support Frank to Sack The Manager storyline is entirely predictable and is more like a particularly bad episode of EastEnders

That's just a way of shutting down criticism of a manager.

Go through this thread and see how many times I compliment Lampard.

You need to be more objective. If a manager has lost us the points then that should be pointed out.

I don't have a problem with criticism. I support him but haven't a clue if he is any good

I originally replied to your quite limited version of "support"

Lampard should take much of the blame for this shambles of a display. He made no changes until after one hour when it was long obvious that Gordon, Guaye and Onana were hopeless. His frozen indecision cost us. Could have subbed at least two of them during the first half.

It was the polar opposite of the sort of performance I expected. That we would have pushed up and been in their faces all game. Taking opportunities to expose their frailty when presented.

To get a win in this type of fixture, it has to be 90% based on organisation and effort. To see them waltzing through us and around us was dispiriting.

It was very disappointing but it is what it is in the context of where we are.

He must be concerned with how everybody looks like a slick footballing side when they face us.

That, and the fact we're due a game where our luck isn't in at the back.

Agreed mate, the whole idea is to compete. We should relish every fixture as a challenge, I’m really disappointed not to get a point tonight. Utd have better players, but there was a point going there tonight and they had flaky confidence.

But we absolutely should be looking forward to Newcastle and Spurs, we should be competitive for points, away draws in particular are enabling, away wins rocket fuel.
This is it. If we are improving like we think we are, then we will go there and compete. If we perform, we have a chance of points in both games. Even last night we were in the game until the end. It's possible we get nothing from those games, of course, and that will be a cause for concern, but most of us are prepared to be patient if the overall trend is positive. I don't go in for the "Super" Frank nonsense - he has loads to learn - and it's possible, even likely, that he will eventually be found out (almost every Everton manager is found out in the end), but he'll get plenty of time from me, regardless of my doubts.

You can't judge a guy on two or three games, which is why if he has us out of the relegation zone by the World Cup break, then that'll do me for now. I'd like us to be comfortable, but it's a big enough job to get us mid-table this season. We have competed in every game so far this season. Providing we can avoid our form falling off a cliff, the signs are reasonably positive that we'll be respectable. I'm disappointed with the United performance and result, but it is what it is. A few wins didn't call for hanging out the bunting either, mind, so our slow climb to respectability continues.

100% mate, excellent post.

Whole thing is a process rather then an event, but we have to be competitive and that has to be baseline, we cant get ahead of ourselves going 7 unbeaten, nor if we loose 3 on the trot go nuclear, i think most rational people can see incremental progress that will have a ceiling, but at the same time frailties still exist in the vacuum of change. Both highs and lows need to be embraced and taken on their own merits as that will be the trajectory and we need to stick with it.

Yup. The fanbase can help the manager here. We need to dial back the silly hype when we win a game or two (shouts for top seven, etc.) and stop going nuclear is we lose a couple on the trot. The bigger picture is what matters. The odd isolated win or loss proves nothing. The overall trend is key. Are we competing? Are we gaining enough points over a representative sample of matches? Right now, the answers to these questions are yes and possibly not. We'll have a better idea by the World Cup.

There is one thing, though, Frank must avoid: a series of hidings where we simply do not compete. Right now, we might not be taking enough points, but we will if we continue to compete. Most of us can see that. If we stop competing, he'll have a problem. So whatever about the Spurs game, we really cannot ship a bad defeat to the likes of Newcastle and follow up with other similar outcomes. But I don't think we will. We need to get to the World Cup looking competitive.
