Town Mayor is quizzed by cops in missing underwear probe | The Sun |News
A MAYOR has stepped down after being accused of breaking into women's homes and parading around in their UNDIES.
Ian Stafford, 58, was last night charged with three counts of burglary after women told police their bras and knickers had vanished.
One worried woman is said to have installed a secret camera in her bedroom.
When cops examined footage they saw a semi-naked man going through her drawers.
The video showed the man putting on her knickers and performing a sex act. Sources said that police had recovered a haul of underwear.
Bachelor Stafford also resigned as a councillor immediately after his arrest. He was elected Mayor of Preesall and Knott End, Lancs, four years ago.
Last night Jill Marr, 63, who worked with him as a Mayoress, said: "This will come as a surprise to anyone who knows him.
"I always thought of him as a very quiet man who was a regular church-goer and very popular in the village.
"He was always extremely courteous and polite to me."
Her husband, town clerk Lionel Marr, said Stafford sounded "upset" as he offered his resignation.
Police said part-time handyman and gardener Stafford, of Preesall, would appear in court next month.
