It has been a perennial problem for guitarists in keeping the 'G' string in tune with the rest of the strings on a guitar.

On my left-handed guitar, above, the 'G' string is the third one from the left, the third thinnest string.

The problem is with what is called 'tempered tuning'. Basically, with a 12-fret instrument, it will never be in totally perfect tune, and the string which grates on the human ear the most as being out of tune, is the 'G' string.

I'm sure many others have had problems with 'G' strings, as I have had...

You have a perineum tear? That must be sore with a G-string.

My g-string doesn't bother me too much, the E, A, D, B and high E strings are out of tune enough to conceal it

I gig weekly (acoustic) and have 4 different acoustics to choose from at home. I snap the G string every time, on all of them.

All joking aside, from my initial post, this is the thing to be guided by. It explains what the problem is with regard to tuning, and how to get as close as possible as can be.

And staying on a serious note (no pun intended!), I always tune the third and sixth strings down a few cents from pitch after tuning the other four spot on to my strobe tuner.
