Gay footballers about to come out

Shouldn't be an issue really. It's really none of my business who a player puts his willy in to.

If our entire squad was gay, I wouldn't be bothered in the slightest.
True story:

kopite: "That McFadden's a gaylord mate."
ste d 'indica: "and.."
kopite (with that screwed up face they do) "He's a 'kin gaylord though!!!!"
'indica: "so what if he is? Look mate, all I care about is if he's playing well, I don't care who he's shagging."
kopite (after a few seconds of misapprehension): ".... your a 'kin gaylord then."
'indica: "Yeah OK mate."

Awful lot of this type bellend in the ranks of every fanbase and I think probably in a lot of clubs a very macho lad culture still prevails. It's going to be a very courageous player that comes out of the locker. He'll have my absolute support and I hope the support of many others, but it may be very tough.

I remember a few reds questioning McFadden's orientation while he was here.

I appreciate all clubs including us have the odd few bells as fans, but even back then, I don't remember many blues actually giving a flying one about it, we were more bothered by the fact that he was essentially the McGeady of 2004 (mainly average with the odd bit of skill and class goal).

My missus is a Charlton fan and she's met a guy in Bristol who's a fellow fan and in fact is a member of a sizeable group of gay Charlton fans who go the match. We went to the Cardiff game and he was telling me the club have been really supportive and they've been growing in confidence at home and away as more fans have gone from accepting them to actually being dead proud of them. He says there's still the odd knobhead and sly comment but overall they feel they have the crowds support. Good to see.

Please tell me there isn't a 'Charlton Gay Fan Group'. That really isn't the way forward.

That's nice to see the club supporting them.
Thomas Hitzlsperger was very brave to tell everyone he played for West Ham.

I always wanted to see him score one of those rocket shots for us.

Seeing a few gay fan groups spring up like Gay Gooners and Proud Lilywhites (Spurs).

Personally I couldn't give a toss if a player comes out as homosexual.

Each to their own.
*sigh*

Surely the worst way to overcome homophobia in football fans is to form a group for gay fans? Do they have a 'Black Spurs Fans' group? You overcome this nonsense by removing the factor, not by highlighting it.
