Gerard Deulofeu - Once a Blue, always a Blue

Sorry Grouch. I've gotten banned from every interesting thread there is, so I'm going to get back in the business of real talk.

I'd like Deufoleu back, but I'm hugely concerned about his progress during his time away. Last transfer window we only secured the squad from the season before and I feel we didn't really get the sort of brand new faces that keep players on their toes. I have a niggling concern that getting him will represent a step back for us.
He was very good for the Spain U21s last year.

Know that isn't the same level but think a lot of the problem was disagreement in approach with their coach. Bit like how Mata wasn't ever going to suit being a Mourinho player, just not defensive minded enough.

In some ways that could be to our benefit as it will hopefully have toughened him up a bit mentally after having found some of his earlier years easy and make him appreciate Martinez/Everton more.

There's defo a new playermaker and CB to come in along with Cleverly. It wouldn't be like we have no new players if we signed Deulofeu.

I'll believe that when I see it. He could well intend Cleverley to play that role. I liked Deufoleu when he was here, but young, promising players can just as easily sink as swim in the foetal stages of their career. I hope his nomadic existence as a loanee hasn't disrupted his development at a very important stage.

Of course, but signing a young player with potential could hardly be considered 'a step back'. If it doesn't work out for him here he'll likely return to Spain and we'll recoup some of what we paid.

I think he'll play in as a CM in a 4-3-3 and as a left-mid in a 4-2-3-1.

Don't think he'll play as a #10.

4-3-3 would seem perfect for our best players in their best postions if we can get Deulofeu back and keep Mirallas, but that doesn't require a player maker as such so I'm not convinced he's got that formation in mind to be honest.

Take Barca's midfield trio for example:

1 DM, Busquets (or however you spell it).
2 CMs, 1 passer (Rakatic) and 1 playmaker (Iniesta).

In a similar manner we could go:

Barry/Besic at DM
McCarthy/Cleverly as the passer
Hypothetical-foreign-exotic-soccerista/Barkley as the playmaker

In order to take Barcas midfield, you cant ignore the 3 infront.

But honestly, ive got this tingle in my bones that El Fraudo will attempt a 4-3-3 next season, if he can get the players.
