Latch

Player Valuation: £15m
Ryan Giggs has just announced that he will retire from international football after the match against the Czech Republic in the euro qualifiers.
Just one of many world class Welsh players down the years who never got to play on the 'big stage', Southall probably being the pick of them.
We (Wales) have not qualified for a major final since the World Cup in Sweden in '58, where the mighty Brazil knocked us out in the QF.

he only played when he wanted to anyway so its no great loss, and dealing with all of fergusons bullshit wasnt doing anyone any favours so best off hands washed of the red faced jock.

I remember that plonker hitting a penalty against the bar when if he had scored wales would have qualified.. what was his name..

At the end of the day though, I bet giggs is proud that he played for Wales and not for England despite the lack of ever playing on the biggest stage internationally.

Very proud Rob, the player you are on about was Paul Bodin, 1994 World Cup qualifier against Romania, our last qualifying game, at home, scores level at 1-1, like you said if it had gone in we would have gone through but it was not to be and the Romanians went on to win 2-1, sickening.

Although i know what you mean ( niggling injuries just before a qualifier ), the fact remains that he is an outstanding player who has served his country well, his last game will be his 64th, not a bad record.

for a player on the scene at 18, and such a gifted player that that, he should have far more than 64 caps - and thats with wales not getting to big tournaments as well.

I think it said in the paper today that Wales played around 115 internationals between his debut and now, so his 64 caps isn't great in that context but it's not really surprising as he has always reserved his best form for the domestic game.

He is one of the few players I can forgiive for being a Manc, wonderous skills, a huge talent, a credit to the game but, yes he could have played more for his country and still could, he is not short of a few bob after all is said and done.b)

I have a huge soft spot for Wales. Loads of ex Everton players and a lot of really good mates there who have converted me to the wonders of the big country.

Im gutted Wales have not made it to a big tournament for years, their fans would do them proud.

For the record, Most capped Welsh player ~ Southall 92, 1982-97

Echoing monty's sentiments, Giggs has been an exemplary professional and role model, with possible exception of begging off some Wales games (but how many missed due to injury?). If he's been more of a prima donna, made controversial quotes in the press, or married a pop star, by now he'd be universally recognized as an all time great.

id say he is one of an elite group, him g.neville, and scholes all started and will all finish at man ure. its unheard of in the modern game in england.
