GOT song origins

Just wanted to get to the bottom of this...........Where does the song originate?.....I know spurs and celtic plus a few other coded teams use it. Were celtic the first to use it and we adapted it in the 60's? A few of my celtic mates were fuming that it was being played after the man utd game saying it was theirs. Naively, I thought it was always ours just like Z-cars.

Also, out of interest what were we singing before these two?

We only started singing "It's a Grand Old Team" in the 1983/84 season - round the same time as wearing bobble hats!!!

Definitely wasn't sung in the Sixties, Seventies or pretty sure even the Eighties. Only became aware of it by late 90's. In the Sixties, 'We Shall Not Be Moved' was our tune, just as the RS had YNWA and Z Cars was played before the game as pre-match music, not when the teams came out.

Both Celtic and Spurs played GOT before us.

It was sung in Liverpool by kids in the 1950s. A book about Scotland Road by Terry Cooke has the footy team from St Anthony's singing it with slightly different words. It's origins though are with Belfast Celtic, and they sang it in the 1920s/30s....Glasgow Celtic took it from their supporters who went over to Glasgow to watch them after Belfast Celtic was forced to close down.

Strange that we adopted it as our "main song" then. Shouldn't we have something more original then? we are everton. any who, I could totally go for a bobble hat. could we make that the everton uniform?

I remember hearing it in the Street End from 84 onwards. Also, on an arl VHS "6 of the Best" you can clearly hear it at Goodison in one of the 84/85 season matches. Billy Maher (of BBC Radio Merseyside) was commissioned to do a version of it in the late 90s for some compilation of Everton songs, and that's more or less when it started to be played over the tannoy at GP.

As for any Celtic supporters complaining about us "stealing" it; well, not like they've ever done anything like that now, is it?!?!?!?
