Radio has always been my favourite media. I've listened to a radio since a young boy, be it football on BBC Radio Merseyside or the national radio station Radio 2 (as was) with Sports Report on a Saturday at 5pm.

I think I got my love of politics from Radio 4, Today Show and Any questions.

Great comedy too.

Almost all the radio I've ever listened to has been talk based, I'm not a great music listener to be honest.

Thought it would be good to have a thread about great radio shows.

Will start with Alistair Cooke's Letter from America.

What a wonderful programme that was.

Interesting memorial lecture on the i-player currently http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05t5jxf

Listen to radio through Podcast form - great for work.

This American Life
BBC Word Service & Radio documentaries
Mark Kermode's film show (BBC)
World Football Phone In (BBC)

Would love some further recommendations

Cricket, nothing will ever beat listening to CMJ ,John Arlott ,Fred Trueman ,Henry Blofeld and Brian Johnson on test match special.the sport on TV is good but listening to these extraordinary characters was like being there as they chatted to each other throughout the days play.it was like sitting in the stand with an old boys club as they reminisce about previous players, playing techniques,Tests from yesteryear, shared jokes etc.Fantastic.

I use to work on a shop floor back in those days, and as soon as play started the radio dials went onto radio 3.

;) It's not intelectual radio but :

I used to be a massive fan of " Fighting Talk " on 5 Live - Saturday's / 11am to 1pm, but it seems to have lost it's way a bit and become tired despite having a presenter shake up.

As a result I've been listening to " the Saturday Warm Up " with Jonny Vaughan on Talksport on Saturdays - same time.
It's exceptionally funny as Vaughan doesn't seem to have a script and just wings it. He frequently goes off topic and ends up talking about the most bizarre things imaginable - bit like this place. Sometimes I have to pull over if I'm driving as I'm laughing that much.

I also like listening to nature programmes on BBC 4 as I find them incredibly relaxing much like listening to the cricket .

Was a massive fan of the late great John Peel too.

Hardly ever have the telly on when I'm alone in the house, much prefer the radio.
