John Dewar was his name. Went to Everton when football all began. I have a letter from Everton confirming the fact signed by Mr Greenwood. I’m a Rangers and Hull fan and All this Ale House league stuff is odd. Rangers (or celtic for that matter) would have taken 5 off either team tonight. Just hope the lad taking his 7 year old kid to the game had a good time. Paterson btw will be a brilliant signing. Best talent out of Scotland for a decade. We got good money you got a good player. No question.

God speed.
Thanks mate. His son (Andrew) was blown to pieces at the Battle of Arras in 1917. I have his diary. Blank pages after he bade farewell to the planet. Days leading up to it in the diary were very sad. He played for Queens Park and was then signed by Everton. I have a photo of him sitting on his Royal Artillery gun before the whole crew were blown to bits.

Why was he sitting on it?

Would love to see that letter if you could post a photo of it. There is a thread of old Everton pictures if you could post it there it would be great.

I’ll have a look at doing that that bud. Need to sober up first. My first football kit btw was Everton. Loved it. Blue socks and white trims but my Catholic half of the family in glasgow didn’t let me in their house cause I had an Everton top on. It was blue. Tragic. But I loved that kit.

Shocking that the pages were empty after he’d gone like ….

That was his son mate. I have the diary in my bedside drawer. He described the last months of his life. Going out in glasgow with his girlfriend. Then down on the train. Then over to France. He gets colder and hungrier and then nothing. Someone gave him a greatcoat, to keep him warm. He was just a normal lad. It’s dreadfully sad. You know what mate, you look at his photo and you look like him. Could have been any one of us.

John’s son Andrew shortly before he was blown to pieces. I’ll not post any more on this but thank you for letting me share my family history with you. Everton is very prominent in it and I hope it gives some of you guys an even better understanding of the history of your club. End.
