Guardiola to be found out in the premier league

I think this is our most current Man City thread, just read about David Silva's twins born extremely prematurely (23 weeks) and tragically only one has survived. Any of us who have had the joy of becoming fathers (and those of us who are mothers) will understand the happiness of seeing your newborn child, but I can't begin to imagine the grief and the strain that he and his partner must feel. Doesn't matter how rich he is, life is much more precious than his wealth. As much as I dislike Sheikh City, I enjoy watching Silva play and I hope he gets back to where he was just a few weeks ago but for all the right reasons.
Nice post mate

Yesterday Guardiola displayed stupidity as a manager. The 'I'll play the same way against every team' was shown up dramatically and doesn't bode well for City in the Champions League. He completely played into the hands of lfc by insisting on playing out from the back when he didn't have Silva. He should have adjusted his game plan and got the ball forward quicker and more often, like they did for their last 2 goals. It is like driving a car the same way even when the conditions change. Stupid. With the over reliance on De Bruyne Klopp just made sure there were enough people around to mark him. Without Silva cutting off the pass out of defence became easier and this gave lfc the advantage. The goal should have been told to mix his passing up earlier than after lfc's fourth. Guardiola's tactics meant they didn't fully take advantage of lfc's defensive weakness until it was too late. City's game management was poor.

Not in the 4th division in ‘07, but he had Busquets and Pedro who were close to leaving the club
I thought I remembered him having 2 of those 3. I couldn't quite remember if it was Iniesta or Pedro.

According to wikipedia he managed Barca B in the 3rd division in 07 and managed them for one season before being promoted to the first team.

Did he manage another team in the 4th division?

People used to say the same thing about Martinez but it was clear Guardiola was willing to lose one battle in return for winning the war.

He won't compromise how he plays. This gives the players who require the confidence and support of their manager to take the risks required to play this way.

Otherwise you get players who retreat into their shell, stop showing for the ball, stop trying to play and instead start hoofing.

Ultimately the English fans will make or break City just the same way they broke Everton. Once the fans start demanding the team adapts then it is over.

And you end up with the turgid football we are forced to endure every week.

He sticks to his guns and fair play to him for that. He has a terrible record against Klopp though. The press kills his teams ability to play out from the back, then they got cut to ribbons with the speed of the attack. The one time he did beat Klopp (5-0 earlier this season) the RS were all over them prior to Mane getting sent off, the press couldn't then be effectively implemented with one man less so City were afforded plenty of space, and at home against that defence it was always going to end in a hiding.

So there is a flaw in Pep's style. If he had to face a Klopp side every week he wouldn't be winning anything. The issue then is can other teams emulate what Klopp's can? Surely the other top five can. Mourinho would need to change his negative, pragmatic style though as it just doesn't work against Pep (bar that one time with Inter when he nicked the result). Don't give City space to play out from the back, and hurt them when you get the ball.

Klopp basically operates the "full court press" tactic if this was Basketball. There are ways around it however. One of them is when throwing the ball back into play after a score to throw the ball long to the mid court at the sides or allowing players freedom to get open within this area. City can do this with their goal keeper kicking. Another way is to trust the ball carrier to be good enough. Unfortunately they didn't have Silva.

There is also a big weakness in employing the press. If City get through the press which they are more likely to than not then they are on to the back four. Plus employing a high press also requires the defending team to make cynical fouls to prevent this occurring so the red card in the first game wasn't surprising.

Eventually in Basketball defending teams realized that the only way to stop the very best teams was to employ a zone defense. Effectively playing the football tactic of "parking the bus".

Pep used this game as another training exercise and he even said before the game this was a chance to test how good his team were. We must also remember Liverpool only won 4-3 and the game changed dramatically when the foul on Stones wasn't called (which I thought was a foul).

The one thing we can both agree on. Football is brilliant when two managers set up to play this way.

So people rate Guardiola as this great manager perhaps the best in the world but what defines a great manager.
Should a manager who is managing Barcelona with the best team in the world win the league and champions league... yes. he won the champions league twice with barcelona out of four attempts, he won the league 3 times out of 4. Is Luis Enrique a great manager too? or does he just managing a great team?
Should a manager with Bayern Munich win the champions league, a team who in his era there perhaps the best in the world.... yes, he didnt win it. He won the bundesliga 3 times but hardly surprising when he signed all their rivals best players from them, eg Lewandowski and Gotze.
My main point being, he failed at Bayern Munich, the league was a gimme for the them but ultimately the champions league he didnt even reach a final.
As for the premier league when did a team last win the league playing Barca esque style football? I dont think its been done. Look what that style did to Everton last season. Then compare Leicester's effective counter attack style.
For me Guardiola has done what has been expected of him as a whole on his career and certainly is no elite manager. His style will be found out and I expect him be struggling next season. I cant understand the hype and odds suggest Man City are huge favourites to win the league... not for me.

This aged well

Saw on SSN that he was wearing a yellow ribbon during his press conference in support of the jailed Catalonia politicos. Now I know he's a proud Catalan but surely he shouldn't be allowed to sport a political symbol?
