2017/18 Gylfi Sigurdsson

Did you also know this during the summer?
I mean, last time Salah was in England was for Chelsea and he was the living embodiment of "pace and nothing else". Now he's improved, obviously, but he was a gamble as well.

We did overspend on Gylfi but it's not like he put his own price tag, and we knew exactly what we'd get - solid and reliable midfielder who's usually great at set pieces. We got exactly that, shocker. And yeah we were foolish enough to give that amount of money, but it's silly season, transfers go for stupid amounts.

It`s not up to me, it`s up to Walsh and co to know these things.

I`m not suggesting for one minute that Salah would`ve come here, just using him as an example of very good players that can still be bought in our price range if we had a half decent DOF / scouting system.

The fee just tells me you need pay £20 million on top of Klassens value to get a midfielder who contributes in the premier these days. Or maybe not.

Joking aside, Gylfi is alright. He's not been played in his favoured position but he's got his head down and got on with it. Puts in a shift for the team and chips in with goals and assists. Not the type to run the show though. Wish we'd brought a functioning number 8 (or box to box player who can carry the ball) as well. I.e. not Klassen.

Salah played for Chelsea and was crap in England.

He could've come here, we didn't go for him, and also it'd be at least 50 as well anyway, as we started to play around like we have money so teams started milking us.

I find the whole ''he plays better on the left'' narrative ridiculous. I've watched him for 6 years now in the PL & I despise watching him play there.

He can defend & attack on both flanks if he plays through the middle. He'll also get a lot more involved in open play.

There is simply nothing logical about having him on the left. I'd much rather see Cenk, Vlasic or Bolasie there.

Play Gylfi through the middle, in a 4-2-3-1 & he will always create goal scoring opportunities.

Mangala or Funes Mori on the left while Baines is injured, Kenny will obviously be playing for Coleman due to the muscle injury.

That Everton XI closely resembles Swansea's, which Gylfi created 66 goals in 124 PL apps with.

Yes, we won that game but looked poor in the first half. Davies played well, but did he play well enough to force Gylfi on the left? No.

Rooney was great too, but I'd rather see him & Davies battle it out for a starting position than having Gylfi wasted on the left.

Almost all of those goals & assists came through the middle. He's a menace on the ball when he has space & time, unrivaled in the PL IMO.

Absolutely this. We've not been subtle and from day one gave it the big one. I recall Martinez loudly trumpeting we could compete on a different level for transfers.

Nice one Bob, just tell everyone the transfer budget too. And now we get milked.

lol lol

The 433 suits him and our best players.

4231 should never be used again.

Nor should 3 at the back until we get far better defenders

The exact same XI can be deployed as a 4-3-3.

IMO Davies/Rooney bottleneck our midfield, and a player as effective as Sigurdsson should be getting a lot more involved on the ball.

Gylfi can create chances out of nothing, and was involved in all 3 goals. It is absurd seeing Davies or Rooney playing centrally over him.

Last season Leroy Fer & Tom Carroll played centrally over Sigurdsson. Swansea played their worst football so far in the PL because of it.

He has the potential to create 2+ goals or more in a match. Last season at home against Crystal Palace he created 5 goals in the 5-4 win.

1 free kick goal, 1 assist from a shot on target deflected into the net by a team mate, and then setting up 3 set piece goals without being accredited a single assist.

He has previously created 6 assists in 7 PL matches, and with the right team mates he could top the charts with the most goals & assists of any Playmaker in the PL.

6 assists in 7 PL matches playing centrally vs 4 assists in 58 PL matches playing on the wing for Spurs.

Sigurdsson officially only has 3 PL assists, he was not accredited for his assist today.

Why would Everton sacrifice his ability to assist & create goals just to defend on the flank?? I was furious over Swansea doing it, and was happy to see Sigurdsson leave them solely based on never having to see him playing on the left..

Lo and behold, he gets bought for £45 million after being one of the best Playmakers in the PL for half a decade, only for Everton to make the same mistakes as Spurs.
