Gylfi hit the post after cutting into the 16 yard box a couple of minutes later. Did very well, considering he's been out for months.

It doesn't really matter. That entire side is built around him, so it artificially inflates what he can do when he plays for them.

The problem is even if we did the same at Everton for some reason, I don't think aiming for the ability of Iceland is the ambition for us, and I don't think he has the pace and overall game to be an elite level playmaker, given he's flopped at every chance he's had above the level of a bottom half Premier League side.

Would love to be proven wrong but at this point I think we just have to accept that we overpaid by about £25m for a squad player, and was the pinnacle of the woeful transfer policy of Walsh and Koeman.

Need to forgot the fee, those things are all over the place these days, if we paid 45m or 15m for him his ability dosent change. Only the value for money perhaps, besides they offset because we got for too much for both Lukaku and Barkley last summer, its swings and roundabouts.
Gylfi is one of our better players, the job Marcel and Marco have over the next few weeks is to get better players and ones who can also work well with the likes of Gylfi, Tosun and Walcot

This may be the most absurd thing ever written in this board. What does that even mean? They are in the World Cup. They knocked an England team loaded with PL talent out of the Euros. If he wasn’t any good, yet they design all tactics around him, why do they keep beating teams?

I don't think theres any 'anger' towards him.

It's just that for the number 10 position it surely should be an exciting player who makes things happen...instead our number 10 is really quite boring bar the odd wonder goal.

Well some people seem to criticise him regardless mate. I thought he was one of our better players in the last two quarters of the season whilst playing out wide in a inbalanced malfunctioning team without a style or pattern of play. Yes I see that he's not to some tastes and I'd like a more skillful ten too ideally who can drive, dribble and has pace. But Gylfi can be productive in the right system, in terms of individual moments crosses, shots, no he isn't an flair 10 though no.I think he's more of a central player who can get into the box and assist than a genuine ten or winger. He was central at Swansea and flanked by two pacy wingers and a target man I think, I that's the way to get the best out of him. I do think we need other creative options too though, I think buying him with Rooney and Klassen was the biggest mistake the latter two don't compliment his game tbh they lack physicality and pace more than he does at this stage.

Anyone who mentions Gylfi's price tag when discussing him is a baboon, Everyone knows he's not worth 50m ffs just drop it already, The prices are jacked because of TV money. The goal at Southampton he pulled out of nowhere.

Can pick a pass.
Set piece merchant.
Good shot on him Swansea/Southampton.

There is absolutely no way you can judge most players from last season, It was wrong from start to finish.

Let's not forget that the fee was also marked up because it put Swansea at serious risk of going down.

I di

Saying he got more out of cleverley doesnt mean we should do the same with another average player. Get more out of a quality player and make them world class.

I guess my point was Silva has a system and Gylfi could fit in a three alongside Gana and a box to box type and also push into ten at times like Cleverly did at Watford for Silva. We do need other options in those slots though.

Assuming Rooney leaves and we get rid of a number of players I think Gylfi would benefit from a settled side that has less “noise” where we try and make a team from a messy squad.

My gut feeling is that he’ll either be our best player or be seen as a hiderance (with his lack of pace) rather than something in between.

Because they setup exclusively to his strengths so they get the best of him.

But even so there's few top sides or other countries he'd get a game for.

Aren’t the other teams doing that against him with their personnel? Didn’t you just describe every competent manager? Yet they still win. Isn’t that about the strongest endorsement of him you can find?

Yup. He’d be great in that role distributing passes outside to Walcott, Tosun, and more of a winger (Lozano?).
