2017/18 Gylfi Sigurdsson

Can't agree on the match fitness thing. He played twice for Iceland in the middle of June, once for Swansea in July, and played his first game for us in the second league game of the season. By the end of that week he'd played twice more, which meant he had as many minutes under his belt as you would expect anyone to get in pre-season. His slow start wasn't down to fitness, it's just a convenient excuse.

We all know we had no set system, I was just countering the point that he'd come into a side in turmoil because it's not true. Again, it's just looking for excuses as to why a player we absolutely smashed our transfer record for had no real positive impact on our season.

It's completely different returning from a pre-season and returning from an injury mate, especially when it's not a system where everyone knows exactly what they're doing, unlike Iceland. It's not general fitness, it's match sharpness. He was leggy in the first few games because he played 45 minutes in a pre-season friendly. It takes two months to get up to speed when returning from pre-season.

You compared it to Iceland, but that's nothing like coming to a new club where Koeman didn't know how he wanted to play in general, or where he'd play Sigurdsson. Iceland - he's been playing that system with those players for close to 4 years now, if not a bit longer actually.

It's not an excuse for him being poor, but it certainly didn't help in those first few weeks/months.

Again, it's just an excuse.

I didn't compare anything to Iceland, I was just saying he wasn't lacking match sharpness because he'd played for Iceland during the summer, before also playing for Swansea, and then playing for us. We only played 4 games in pre season, spread over 3 weeks, so if it took him any more than 4 games to get sharp - which it did - he can't blame it on pre season because he'd trained normally so his first 4 games for us should have just acted as his pre season.

The truth is, Sigurdsson never really got going for us last year. It doesn't make him awful, or mean we should sell him or whatever, but I doubt there's a single person in the world - including him - who thinks he played really well last year. It really is that simple. All the talk about pre season and the team being in crisis etc is just covering up the fact that he was disappointing. Hopefully this season he will put that behind him and be a key member of the team.

Think the other thing that I’ve always found weird is fans who say “people need to get past the £45m we paid for him”

It’s hard to get past it when we paid £45m for him!
But what does it matter what we paid ? We tried to get him cheaper but couldn't, people are just use to us not having that much money to spend but we did last summer,.
We were never going to get a player of his ability cheap unless there an unknown, but he had been doung it in the Premier League so the fee was proberbly right

It wasn't the fee that was wrong , it was spent on the wrong type of player.
If we had a team with loads of pace, but needed some craft, a good ball player then it would have made a lot of sense.
But, we already had a team that lacked pace , we has already signed a player(Rooney) that we knew could play as a creative midfielder and we never replaced our main striker and goalscorer.

Sometime, I would love if Koeman could be asked about the logic in what they did and how he hoped to set up the team after signing the players they did. We must also remember he very nearly spent another 30m on Giroud.

You serious. He had his chance at spurs and couldn't cut it. Has a bit of a Darren bent about him.

Swansea saw how desperate we were to get him and kept on pushing the price up. Add on 10m to his fee and your looking at the aubameyengs and sterlings of this world.

Who cares what he did at Spurs, that's silly talk, Salah didn't cut it at Chelsea, sometimes club's and plays are just a good fit, Siggy and Everton are perfect for each other

Hope so.

IMO it's wrong to judge any of our attacking players last year due to the negativity of the manager. Let's see how he does in a more front foot attacking system. If he fits in well, then brilliant we haven't wasted our money and don't need to spend loads more on a replacement.

Basically we're starting from scratch again, as if the last 2 years never happened. Except we don't have Lukaku and Barkley any more of course.

Big season for the lad, a chance to rescue his reputation at club level or not as the case may be.

I'm just baffled how

Del
Lookman
Vlasic
Funes Mori
Besic

Just off the top of my head, all seem to have 'better rep' than Gylfi, when none of them have his quality or actually, have done anything more for the club in the time they were here/have been here than Gyfli has.

It's ridiculous.

He's a good player. He needs to improve next year but if people looked at it objectively they'd realise last year, all things considered, he did okay.

I don't think he was 'superb' in any game, apart from maybe West Ham, but he showed in flashes what he can do and then over the course of December to March was extremely consistent. A genuine 7/10 every game.

Maybe that doesn't stand out as much as a lad who takes on one player in a derby though?
