2024/25 Harrison Armstrong

It'll be interesting to see how he develops. With his build and style of play, I would be asking him to watch Declan Rice as an example of somebody who has made the most of their talents. If we could loan him out to a club that's winning more matches and plays better football than Derby that would be really helpful for us and him.

I was thinking the other day if I had to liken Harrisons skill set or attributes stylistically to a former player who would it be.

I ended up with Scott Parker.

Did you actually watch him? He showed absolutely nothing against a very poor Luton side and people have been mentioning Ballack, Barry and Carrick as comparable players 😂 So the only reason for optimism is the fact he is getting picked aged 18 and that he might improve. His actual performances don’t suggest he is going to be a premier league level player anytime soon.

No one is criticising him. I am criticising people who are being overly optimistic on his potential based on very little evidence. His performance yesterday was very very poor in a very poor game. That’s just a fact. It doesn’t mean he’s a bad player and he doesn’t mean he can’t improve. But based on yesterday there’s no indication of any unusual level of ability other than the fact he is only 18 and was actually picked to play.

It’s not a fact at all, it’s an opinion - the actual facts are that he made more passes and more accurate passes than anyone on his team. So were they simple or defensive passes? No. He made the most accurate long passes and into the final third. They are facts. All pretty astonishing for an 18 year old in a pressured game. It was clear to most yesterday that he can both see and execute the kinds of passes that no one else on the pitch could. I’ve zero doubt that he’ll be a prem player.
Nobody was comparing him to those players, just the ‘type’ of player he reminds us of. Carrick/Barry are sitters which I don’t think will be him at all, Ballack in his pomp was box to box but capable of playing deep as well, I think Harrison could be similar stylistically. Obviously to even be in the same breath as the above three he’d have to do very very well.

I think the amount of criticism there is harsh, he was one of Derby’s better players in an awful performance (I don’t think he played particularly well mind). He played some progressive passes and wasn’t scared to show for the ball.

Takes some courage as an 18 year old to do that. Not sure why you’re discounting age, if he was 28 putting that performance in then fair play, he’s just starting his professional career though and his first competitive games are in one of the toughest leagues in the world. I’d say he’s doing alright.

Nothing to suggest he will make it so far. Some players are highly rated at every level like Barkley, Rooney, Baxter, Osman, Roswell. Even those guys aren't guaranteed successes. I remember the Moore twins at Villa who won the FA youth cup against Rooney and ripped it up at that level. Did absolutely nothing in the pro game. The odds are that he won't make it. If he does great but we should manage our expectations.
Could have been a great player - almost from another planet

Take the rose tint glasses off. He made a few safe passes but contributed very little. If he was a linked target rather than an academy player no one would be excited about signing him after watching him yesterday. Zero doubt? Jesus. Even players who are the best in their age groups at every level growing up aren't guaranteed to make it. Look at Michael Branch or the Moore brothers from Villa back in the day.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 hilarious take ffs the kid has only been 18, 2/3 months and is playing his first games in a man’s league for a
Team fighting relegation. I’d rather listen the opinion of derby fans, who’ve raved about him and the manager who picks him every game and says he has big future in the game.
Also there’s plenty of loans that haven’t gone well, look, At Harry Kane even Branthwaite wasn’t great at Blackburn

I'm not sure you understand my point. First time I've watched him play a full game yesterday and he showed absolutely nothing to suggest he will make the grade. That doesn't mean he won't. It just means he didn't show anything yesterday. Hardly controversial. I don't think it make sense to go overboard on young players in either direction. Lots who look completely sure things don't make it and a few that nobody rates improve and do make it. Unless you have a generational talent like Rooney or Barkley nobody really knows. I remember people talking about a kid called Josh McEachran at Chelsea as a nailed on future England legend but he did nothing at the top level.
