There has been a big push from the media in the UK (BBC in particular) to give woman's football more coverage over the past couple of years, I understand why they want to do this but Im not sure if it's really having the desired effect.

The BBC posted an article about the woman's premier league recently and made the mistake of enabling comments resulting in all the top voted comments basically telling BBC to stop shoving woman's football down our throats and that no one cares about it... blunt but in my experience true. What i do find surprising is just how much it annoys some people...

So im left wondering is there really any hope of woman's football ever growing to a significant level in this country ? What will it take for it to get to same level as say woman's tennis ? In the US its somewhat popular and there doesn't seem to be a stigma attached to it but in the UK it's pretty much ridiculed and everyone (bar women) seem happy for it to stay that way.

No-one cares about women's tennis though. Not really. Who is the world #2? Couldn't tell you.

I actually thoroughly enjoyed the Women's World Cup last year; though the standard was incomparable to mens football, it was much better than I expected. But no, it'll probably never garner a strong following. Because women's sport in general just isn't particularly attractive to spectators, largely because it's just not the peak of human ability. I don't think there's a sport where women are stronger or faster or more physical or technically able.

But as a father of three girls, I'd love them to want to play football regularly, and I hope there are more opportunities for them in future. Having some exposure to the highest level can't be that bad, can it?!

I truly don't care one way or another about woman's football, I know we're all supposed to be 'enlightened' by now and love it but I just don't care. I wouldn't bother watching it even if I had free time on my hands but I certainly don't dislike it. I just don't think it will ever really succeed here at the level some would like it to because not enough people give a dam. You can try and push it but I just don't think it will ever really take.

Had it been left alone it would probably have done well and grown to quite a level, but the FA have spent the past thirty years doing their best to ruin it.

I'm afraid I can't get into the women's game at all. I appreciate the absence of cheating and violence but it's definitely lacking the intensity of the men's game.
I guess the Beeb are pushing it because their portfolio of sport is a bit thin these days.

i can name countless famous female tennis players spanning many decades whereas I literally can't name a single female football player.

Williams sisters, Graff, Navratilova, Hingis, Seles, Sharapova etc are/were recognisable names to the average joe. Legit sport stars on a global level.

I can't name a single woman's soccer player who has reached that level.

True, but women's tennis feels like it's going through the motions right now. Serena and a swathe of nameless Eastern European lasses.

My point was that even as the most high profile of women's sports, it still comes a distant second to it's make counterpart.

The issue is not women's football, it's the attitude to women's sport. Women's football will no doubt increase in popularity but it'll never get mainstream crowds.

Yes. The girls have got better looking. Less dyke types. Oh and yeh the standard of play has also improved so its a big yes from me Simon.

What's with the dislikes? Ya can't say women who play football are better looking these days either? PC tory nonsense from the usual suspects. Lighten up.

I never would get into women's club footie. But national teams, yea, today quite a few countries can at least scrap together enough talent to make a international tourney fun to watch. For me its a nice little thing to binge on during the offseason.

Its still a sport that's in its infancy but its getting better. In 2000 it was a bunch of hot garbage but there is decent skill on display now. Problem is other than a few countries there is no real youth program for women (and in America where its big at the youth level its run by no nothing nazi parents). The NCAA has improved the quality of play as many decent young players now go to america on scholarship. Its not perfect (you are only allowed to practice around 15-20 hrs/week I think but it helps.

It would also help if you can make money playing soccer. America pays their international talent a decent amount of money, and I think a few countries in Europe offer a living wage. For example I remembering reading Mia Miyama in Japan made about $40K in 2012 when she was the best player on Japan's WC winning side.

No

Absolutely not.

I know of no one, not even ladies whom attend games at Goodison, with an interest in the women's game.
