Does anyone here brew their own beers??

I'm pretty sure there has to be one or two of you out there!
I'm thinking of having a crack at it and could do with some pointers on where to start! I fancy a stout first and have been eyeing up the kit below.. any thoughts?

Great stuff and simple to do.
Get your malt extract, lob in brewing sugar (not granulated sugar) and boiling water to dissolve the lot, top it up to 40 pints, check the temperature of the mix is below 35⁰C and add yeast (check the date ...old packets die) ... and wait around 1-2 weeks.
Use a hygrometer to measure the original gravity at the start. After a week or so measure the specific gravity at that point ... then the next day, then the next ... when it stops going down, your brew is ready to be decanted into bottles or barrels.

The key is to keep a stable brewing temperature.... something like a comfortable room temperature is best - but not too warm as you get off notes, not cold so that the fermentation stalls.

Play around with hops (all available on ebay) - there are hundreds of varieties .... and lots of info telling you the flavour profiles. High alpha acid content will give bitterness. If you want more bitter and less aroma, stew a hop tea for 20 minutes or so and add it to your brew near the end.

Cleanliness is key - disinfect everything with sterilising solution. (I use a wallpaper steamer for my brew barrel - it's less messy).

Enjoy.

You sure that URL is safe for work

My late uncle did it in spades - his son became an alcoholic & he died then my late Uncle died of the big C - IMO too many chemicals - I must say I had a pint or 2 it was good stuff ..... :(

I started making my own cider during covid. Started off with a small 5L kit to see how it went, then upgraded to a 20L. Not done it for a while, but will make some more when I get time.

The biggest tip I can give is to make sure you sterilise everything before you start, and make sure your bottles are sterilised before bottling.

Good luck 👍🏻

I used lidl apple juice, made it too 6% clear sparking cider. Cheap and cheerful 🙂

You have piqued my interest. Is it that strong a bourbon glass is required for shots only?

How long did this alchemy take and around what cost?
