How important is the EL spot?

I personally disagree with this. The fa cup maybe yes. But the league cup I think is on its final legs and it wont be long until it's totally scrapped as a competition and noone will even care about who won it. It's already a competition that nearly all clubs use to utilise their reserve teams.

For real true prestige in a team and to show a certain level of ability it's mainly the league placing or European competition. Even the FA cup is dwindling in that regard. It's not just an opinion this, its pretty obviously the case.

Personally Id rather have won a League cup in the past 5 years mate than got to play Atalanta in 2017.

The EL is only a good comp for 'elite' clubs that get knocked out of the CL as a way to get in CL the following season.
Would love Everton in it though, love a Euro tour.

Back in/before Silva's first season, I didn't want it as our squad was in the middle of recovering from some of the worst transfer business a club's ever done.

Now that our squad and manager has improved considerably from those days, taking into account the revenue and exposure it generates and the higher calibre of player it attracts, there is no longer a debate on whether this is worth qualifying for. It's about as big a no-brainer as you can imagine. If we're not in the CL, we need to be in the EL.

purely as a travelling fan i would much rather be in the EL than the CL, usually a much more diverse range of places to visit, our trips to the likes of Kharkiv and Krasnodar will always live in the memory far more than the likes of Paris would.

Without regular Europe and/or winning domestic trophies we’ll be in perpetual transition... if we don’t finish in Europe for next season I can definitely see Richarlison leaving in the summer. If we fail to again next season then there’s no way the likes of Rodriguez, Digne or Allan will be hanging around either.

Europe is vital for us to progress

Personally I think getting European football even if it’s the Europa League will help us bring in better players. Ancelotti has already shown the calibre of players he’s been able to attract to the club, just by being the manager alone and if he’s got us a European finish which is progress on last season some of these players may look at it as a path to playing Champions League football or even just to play with Carlo himself at a good side. As well as poss attracting those players, it may convince one or two current players just to stick around a bit longer.

All in all, I wouldn’t turn my nose up at the prospect of Europa League. Would be a better competition if it weren’t for the Champions League dropouts and the format change from the UEFA Cup days, but that’s for another thread.

The El success is a path to CL, is it not?

Yes, if you win it. But if effectively rules you out of qualifying through the league. United did it last season (finished top 4 after starting in EL) but they were only the 3rd team to do so.

It is too big a handicap the thursday / Sunday thing & if we get EL; I think there is virtually no chance of kicking on the next season in terms of points

Much as I would be over the moon winning the FA cup the thought of being in a European country watching us lift a trophy is something I hope I see before I leave this planet given I was 5 months old when we last done it. Also it should of been the first of a few more European trophies.

For the fans huge.

depending on the draw, it’s huge for the club too.
now gone is the 3 rounds of qualifiers and you’re automatically in. Instead of 12 games before Christmas it’s a maximum of 6.

For all clubs looking to achieve you need to build from somewhere, if we drew a group like Arsenal or Spurs did this season (Dundalk, Molde & Rapid; Standard, Ludogorets, etc) then you’re walking through the group and you’re 7 wins from Champions League.

The fact is we have have depth at GK (if Olsen stays), in central defence and centre of the park to make it work.

so yes, huge for me, and that includes the conference league.

For me it’s very important in raising the clubs profile, increasing revenue streams and giving us all something to look forward to mid week. I guess teams take it more seriously when they know they can progress far and make it worthwhile. Of course we all want to win domestic honours, but as Utd proved there are the odd years when the EL is dead easy. EFL cup has been hard to win in recent times with City steam rolling it every year, and the FA cup with every team now clamouring to win it outright (and us being drawn against the RS every other year). Maybe the EL is an easier route to silverware albeit a more arduous one?
