Reidy's Bottle Of Grecian

The Unobstructed View
havin a party round my 'arls tomorrow and we're havin' a big tub full of ice cubes and water to keep the ale chilled.

the question is how much salt do you add to it to stop the ice from melting ?
we did it last year and the cubes hadnt even melted the next day, but cant remember how much salt you add in proportion to the water+ice.

one of you must know ?

Reidy I reckon about two teaspoonsish of salt to about 500ml of water.

For the rest of you, if you put salt in water before freezing, it lasts longer.

so about 2 bags to a wheelie bin then.

if we use the brown bin then people can ditch their empties whilst rummaging for a fresh one......... a self cleaning shindig.

now, if we can only get people to eat over the grey bin then the job will be complete.

it's mad the way it works cos you dont use as much ice either cos the ice chills the water and doesnt melt. maybe thats how we should prevent the ice caps from melting, make the sea around them salty.

As a younger chap , I was beyond gobsmacked to witness the Straight between Germany and Denmark frozen solid for the first time in 2 generations .
All salt water , yet when the icebreakers finally smashed a way through , cobs , the size of car parks , and 30 feet thick came up .
Knocked my post - pubescent socks off .
I'll believe anything now .
Had some boss icey pics from then if I could , a ; ever find them , and b ; learn how to get them on a website .

This works because sal****er has a lower freezing temperature than straight water, thus the ice can sit in water that's actually colder than the ice itself.

**EDIT**

LOL...have to laugh at the auto-censor

Experiment 1: Ice vs. Ice + water vs. Ice + water + salt vs. fridge vs. freezer

Initial measurements:

* Ice
* Ice + water: 33 degrees
* Ice + water + salt (salt melts ice and lowers the freezing point): 24 degrees

Results (after 5 minutes):

* ice: 57 degrees
* ice water: 44 degrees
* salt water: 35.9 degrees
* freezer: 55 degrees
* fridge: 60 degrees

Final results: * Ice + water + salt: 5 minutes * Ice + water: 15 minutes * Freezer: 25 minutes * Ice: 30 minutes * Fridge: 40+ minutes

This was on Mythbusters last season
