He would have been pivotal in South Africa, we needed a creative player like Mikel to pull the strings in the middle of the park which was non-existant with out top performers failing to reach the heights that were expected of them.

Saying that, his future would be in even more doubt as a result if he had played well so thankfully he remains optimistic of gaining a spanish call up

I wouldn't want Arteta to play for England, it shouldn't even be allowed. Just because he has lived here for 5 years doesn't give him the right to play for our national side. This is becoming more popular and quite a few nations have many foreigners in their team, like Germany. If this continues internationals will just be league sides playing each other, e.g. Bundeliga v La Liga.
