If Martinez went.....

I'm not being confrontational here Groucho, but for me (and I think I echo the thoughts of many other Evertonians) Roberto is already our 'saviour'. The football we played the last couple of decades has been borderline shameful to me. I'd never feel ashamed of Everton, but the football was an embarrassment most of the time. We'd been consigned to the 'long ball' club category and forgotten about...and to be quite honest, I wouldn't have blamed neutrals switching off their tvs by the millions if we'd have been a live game on the telly. But now we play in our own traditions again. We're back with a bang as one of the best (probably the best) football teams in this league. He's done that far more quickly than I ever anticipated.

My first posts concerning RM when he arrived were that he'd face his biggest fight not on the pitch but off it. I knew that the culture had to be changed and that it'd be a mammoth battle given the direct approach that previous managers, especially Moyes, had adopted and which many of our support had been weaned upon. Sadly, that was bang on the money. He's struggled to win the PR war in the media where Moyes' old mates have had it in for him since the day he arrived and he's had to face down the element of our support who seem to think launching the ball quickly from the back is the right (Everton) way of doing things.

So whatever he does and whatever happens from this point on, at the very least Martinez has dragged this club back to its own traditions and struggled to change the culture of the club.

We played the best, and by consequence most effective football, of his reign in the first season.

On that note what has he done apart from take us backwards, how can any supporter be happy with that

Not relevant to this thread though is it ?
There's a Martinez thread for talking about his good and bad points.

The OP raised the question who would people like in charge if Martinez ain't here. If it's too difficult for people to understand the question then maybe their opinions ain't worth much ?

That is a load of rubbish. Our fans are enjoying the attacking football. They are just not enjoying watching a team that has zero defensive ability.

They are rightly concerned that he inherited one of the best defences in the league and after 2 and a half years it is now one of the worse. What's more concerning is that at no stage in his career has Martinez demonstrated that he is capable of managing a team that can defend.

As soon as we made it 3-2 on Monday I had a feeling that we might (actually is was probably) not hold onto the lead. It is not acceptable that a 4-3 home defeat to Stoke no longer shocks the fans.
Not exactly true that though, is it? Moyes teams gave the impression of having one of the best in the PL but they were nowhere near the best defence in the league...in fact, if you look at Moyes' last four campaigns here his team barely bears comparison with Roberto's defensive record:

Moyes last four seasons goals conceded: 40, 40, 45, 49
Martinez two full seasons goals conceded: 39, 50.

That averages out at 43.5 goals conceded per season under Moyes versus 44.5 goals conceded under Martinez.

Do we need to sort the defence out? Yes. Are you exaggerating the type of solid defence Martinez took and 'ruined'? Yes.

Don't think he is going any were at the moment.
But if we get new owners I would expect a big name ,
Thing Howe has done well out of the young managers, Koeman doing a decent job, how about Glen Hoddle?

Hoddle would make a better coach than manager i think.
Howe and koeman i would like.

I reckon there's very few managers who really "shape" a team with any sort of consistency between appointments. Pulis gets a lot of hate, but the man stamps his image on to teams and gets results wherever he goes. He'll never be brought into the fold at a club that has money because of his reputation, but I'd like to see what he would do with a bit of cash and a good footballing side. Not with us though.

Mourinho is another, but current footballing economics puts him well out of our league. The only other really top class manager operating close to our bracket is Mauricio Pochettino, and he'll be moving up after Spurs, I imagine. Great manager.

Yeah pulis does a good job of keeping a team up but like you i wouldn't want him here.

This thread reminds me of an old Irish expression my Granny was fond of using.

"If ten people walked in a room with you and you all laid your troubles out on a table........you would lift your own troubles and walk right back out the door".

In other words, there is always someone worse off than you are.

And none of the names being bandied around here, save Pep and Jose (who is beginning to look like a bit if a busted flush anyway IMO) would fill me with any great enthusiasm.
